JavaOne Shanghai Ramps Up #GeekBikeRide

The excitement is building for JavaOne Shanghai, and here are just three of the events that have happened for the Java Community.

On Sunday, the Green Tea JUG took advantage of the speakers coming to China for JavaOne. Over 150 developers heard speakers from Oracle, IBM and Alibaba covering topics from Java EE new features to OpenJDK Best Practices. JUG leader Leo Yu said "It was a great event!"

Now a tradition around the world, the Geek Bike Ride also preceded JavaOne. In matching bike jerseys, over 50 riders enjoyed a ride near the HuangPu river. In deference to the 90+ heat and high humidity, the group stopped for refreshments halfway through the ride. It was a great fun and camaraderie. Thanks to InfoQ for sponsoring the ride! On Monday, the APAC User Group Leaders' Meeting was held. Oracle ACE Director Rich Niemiec presented and explained why Big Data is so important in the world of IT. ""We are growing in data, but thirsting for information," he explained. Java Evangelists provided overviews of the latest developments in Java, including the JDK8 Early Access. Stephen Chin gave a great demo of Lambda functionality and how a developer would use it for JavaFX (the demo included a sprite named Mary and she was followed out of the barn by several lambs). The group also discussed user group best practices, and had an interesting round of 4-minute talks.

At the Shanghai Expo Center, the Java DemoGrounds and OTN Lounge have been built. The stage has been set for a fantastic JavaOne!

The 2013 Java Theme Community Challenge

Launching today!
Name the "Community Keynote" at JavaOne this year by submitting a crazy, fancy, funny, geeky slogan about what you LOVE about Java! Find 140 characters (not a coincidence) to describe your personal connection with the world's most pervasive programming language and share it with us.

The Challenge is open to individuals or organizations. 10 of the most outstanding submissions will be selected by a combined committee from SouJava, LJC and iJUG e.V. and Oracle. Those 10 enter a public community voting round at  java.net for 10 days. The winning entry will be announced on the website shortly thereafter. The winner will receive a full conference pass to 2013 JavaOne San Francisco.
