First aid when emulator doesn't start

We have got few bug reports about not starting emulator. After some research we would like to summarize possible causes.

1. Freshly installed windows doesn't have msvcrtXX.dlls

Got to folder runtimes\\cdc-hi\\bin and copy Microsoft.VC80.CRT into runtimes\\cldc-hi-javafx\\bin. This problem will be fixed over autoupdate soon.

2. Problem with localhost

Please edit <javamesdk_installdir>\\toolkit-lib\\modules\\bootstrap\\conf\\system.properties and change
device-manager.object-registry.host=localhost  to:  device-manager.object-registry.host=127.0.0.1

3.  Port 1299 might be taken

Please edit <javamesdk_installdir>\\toolkit-lib\\modules\\bootstrap\\conf\\system.properties and change
device-manager.object-registry.port=1299  to:  device-manager.object-registry.port=1999

4. XP 64-bit

Please use 32-bit version of JDK.

5. Firewall

Make sure that firewall is not blocking communication on ports given in 3. Default port numbers are 1299 for windows and 1999 for Mac.

ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theatre (auto detection) fails, so I specify the path to player executable:
C:\\Program Files\\ArcSoft\\TotalMedia Theatre 3\\uDTStart.exe

When a fix will be released?

Ow, Thank you. I have been struggling forever with this. went through 3 reinstalls and stuff..

Thanks

@Carlos: The Java ME SDK 3.0 release supports autodetection for Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 2.0. If you want to use different player or version, you must specify an executable, that is capable of running a Blu-ray structure that is passed as a first argument. For TMT 2.0 it's "uDigital Theatre.exe". Alternatively, you can try running from build/deploy directory directly from the player.

OK, I am using JavaME based on WTK 2.5.2 and Netbeans 6.5.1,
and I do not have "<javamesdk_installdir>\\toolkit-lib\\modules\\bootstrap\\".
So all "solutions" do not work for me :(

Posted by Nick on March 22, 2010 at 12:02 AM PDT #

Actually, neither of those suggestions worked for me.

But another one worked, so I documented it in my blog and filed a bug-report.

The workaround is to disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for runMidlet.exe.

See the full error and description on how to disable DEP for an executable on http://blog.robin.smidsrod.no/index.php/2010/05/08/are-you-unable-to-run-the-javame-sdk-3-0 .

Hi. I'm using Java ME SDK 3.0 on my Mac.
Suddenly i can't run any project i was working on on the emulator.
On the device selector it says No device found.
Yesterday i could use all the devices on the emulator...
I've tried reinstalling Java ME SDK 3 but with the same result.

I've disabled Mac firewall.

On the IDE if i go to Tools -> Java platforms there is only the J2SE JDK 1.6, no J2ME like there was.

I have a presentation tomorrow :( ... anyone can help me with this?

Actually i got it to work... i created another user installed it from there... but my user still cant run the emulator. the IDE's window looses focus but then nothing happens. i've seen in the logs it's a problem with the ports, the weird thing is that it works on a user and not the other ( and i copied the Application Support folder from the working to the non-working and no luck...
all my documentation is in the other user, all the bookmarks, memo's, etc... crap.

Hi Jorge,
pls look at blog entry about log files here http://blogs.sun.com/javamesdk/entry/where_are_my_logs
You can change verbosity of logging changing INFO level to DEBUG or TRACE in log4j.xml in toolkit-lib/emulator/generic/core/conf
Then send me device log file to tomas.brandalik@sun.com

You can do test launch of emulator and wipe out all initialization files:
1. stop all emulators stop device-manager
2. delete /<user home>/Library/Application Support/javame-sdk
-optionally you can change verbosity of logging now
3. open console and go to /Applications/Java ME SDK 3.0.app/Contents/Resources/bin. Run device-manager. Does it start? Does it create structures in /<user home>/Library/Application Support/javame-sdk ?
4. open another console in /Applications/Java ME SDK 3.0.app/Contents/Resources/bin and run emulator -Xjam. Does emulator start?

hope this helps
-Tomas

Thanks, Robin Smidsrød! DEP was the issue for me. I suggest adding Robin's tip to the list of things to try in this post.

Hi all,

did anyone find way to resolve this problem..

C:\\Documents and Settings\\Administrator\\My Documents\\NetBeansProjects\\CellInfo\\nbproject\\build-impl.xml:889: Execution failed with error code 1.

Posted by puma on June 03, 2010 at 10:17 PM PDT #

Sry, but if none of the resolutions work what shall i do?
Already search a hundred or so forums and still nothing...

Same error as every1. On this line

<nb-run jadfile="${dist.dir}/${dist.jad}" jarfile="${dist.dir}/${dist.jar}" jadurl="${dist.jad.url}" device="${platform.device}" platformhome="${platform.home}" platformtype="${platform.type}" execmethod="${run.method}" securitydomain="${evaluated.run.security.domain}" commandline="${platform.runcommandline}" classpath="${platform.bootclasspath}:${dist.dir}/${dist.jar}" cmdoptions="${run.cmd.options}"/>

Hi everyone...

Where is the folder (runtimes\\cdc-hi\\bin) ?

No one talk about oracle plans with netbeans and wtk.
MIDP3 specifications has been released but no WTK yet.

Is there some news?

I'm not able to start the emulator on my Windows Mobile 6.5.3 phone (Acer P300).
I followd the instructions in the doc "Java ME Platform SDK and
Windows Mobile Integration".
After installed in the phone I see a cyan window (like the one shown in the doc) while in the Device Selector I see "Other->CldcWinceEmu1 (as explained in the doc).
But, when I try to run an application on that device I got:

\*\*\* Error \*\*\*
Failed to connect to device 12!
Reason:
Failed to initialize connection with device 12! (possible runtime incompatibility)
Process exited with exit code 1

Do you have any idea?

I've got Netbeans 6.9.1 with Java ME WTK 3.0 and Windows 7 x64.
I'm having the same error: "Execution failed with error code 1"
And: "Attaching to localhost:50159 Connection Refused"
What can I do?

Posted by Ariga on October 27, 2010 at 12:45 AM PDT #

Thank you

J2ME is VERY strange!
I have two PC's. Both XP based. On one it works, on another don't. They are almost equals. Very strange.
I did all of those tips, restart and it began to work. Strang :-)
Thanks a lot!

Posted by Chiz on November 15, 2010 at 11:03 PM PST #

I used a 64 bit version..

I definitely agree with your ideas. Informative and very unique. Thanks. keep posting!

I just tried to install Netbeans 7.0.1 with jdk1.6.0_01 and Java_ME_platform_SDK_3.0.5 on:
1. AMD64, Windows7x64, JAVA JDK both 32 and 64
2. AMD64, WindowsXPSP3 32, JAVA JDK 32
3. Intel32, Windows7x32, JAVA JDK32

And whatever I do I can't get rid of that error.
Turning DEP off didn't help (it was off already anyway)
Doing everyting from check list at the top of this page didn't help either.

Is there anyone at all who made this wotk, anyway???

Thank you a lot ! I resolve my problem with the option number 1.

Posted by Fenester on March 02, 2012 at 07:21 AM PST #

None of the options worked for me.. what i found was an error with my network connections... i was using a proxy for connection.. So i disabled proxy(in combination to turning on DEP, and using option 2 and 3) and now its working fine..

When I run my program(which was running fine till yesterday morning),the emulator shows without the option for launch!and when I close it,it returns an error

Please help!!!

DEP workaround works for me.

Using Netbeans 7.2 and JDK 1.7.0.

Everything was running fine until yesterday but now i got this error. Please help me to fix this error. The emulator seems to be working fine at times.

JavaME SDK 3.2 is completely broken in Windows 8.

I'm running JDK 1.7 32bit, the emulator doesn't start in eclipse
and it doesn't start in netbeans.
There is no way to start it and this guide doesn't helped.

Any idea?
