Building Robots with Java Embedded

Join us for the new training on building robots with Java Embedded. This training is free and will be live on hangout or YouTube, Tuesday April 15 at 10:00am Singapore time; 7:30am India Mumbai; 11:00am Tokyo Japan; 2:00am UTC. Globalcode founder and embedded expert Vinicius Senger will focus on homemade robots and the Lego Mindstorms robots.

This training offers a chance to direct questions to top experts and get you started with your own project.  Once you have your own project ready, submit a video and the code by May 30 for a chance to win a trip to JavaOne 2014.

The results of the Java EE 8 Community survey are in, synthesizing the feature wish lists of several thousand developers. Java EE specification lead Linda DeMichiel posted the final results on her personal blog.  A detailed breakdown of the survey data is available on java.net

Have you ever wanted to create your own weather station or design a device to control the lights in your home automatically?

All of these questions will be answered in this practical hands-on course. This course introduces Java developers to the world of embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Embedded controllers are already a part of our lives. Meters read electric and water usage and send the readings to a central office. Electronic thermostats turn on the heat and air conditioning as required.

Java Embedded leverages your experience with Java to open the world of the Internet of Things by providing direct access to electronic sensors and mechanical devices.

Create Apps with the Gemalto Concept Board

"The Gemalto concept board has 2G and 3G support, so you can send text messages, place a call, write Java Midlets and Arduino shields support" explains Vinicius Senger.

In this video, he presents step-by-step tutorials on how to configure the Gemalto boards and to create a project controlling LED lights. Hacking with Raspberry Pi and Java

Two new videos about Raspberry Pi GPIO with Java are now available. This hands-on training  is part of the IoT Developer Challenge and will help you to create a winning project to submit. This is a great opportunity to win a trip to JavaOne 2014! Submissions are accepted until May 30, 2014

In the first video, you will learn about the Raspberry Pi set up and the installation of Java SE Embedded and JavaFX. In the second video below, expert Vinicius Senger explains the Raspberry Pi GPIO and protocols as well as how to use the Pi4J project, a set of libraries enabling the access of the Raspberry Pi with Java. Vinicius also gives several demonstrations using a camera, LED lights, buttons and a relay board to connect to appliances. Java 8 at EclipseCon 2014


Oracle is sponsoring a full day of Java 8 at EclipseCon on Tuesday, March 18, 2014. With Java 8 being released on that day, you will be the first to hear from the Java 8 architects after the release. 

As part of the program, Java architect Stuart Marks and engineering director Georges Saab will discuss the new features in Java 8. Java architect Alex Buckley will present lambdas. Expert Thomas Schindl will tackle JavaFX 8.  

The late afternoon will be about the Internet of Things and embedded Java ME and SE, a big focus of the Java 8 release. Java architect Hinkmond Wong will present Java SE 8 compact profiles for embedded development. Expert Robert Clark will explore how to bring Java to the Internet of Things. 

Join us on March 18 for an evening reception from 18:00 to 19:00.

JavaOne 2014 Call for Papers Now Open!

It is time to submit all those talks you have been thinking about. "We have a huge focus on community at this event, and it would be great to have many proposals from the developer community." explains JavaOne Content Chair Stephen Chin.

There is a new dedicated track for Agile development this year, making a total of nine Java tracks.  This year's tracks are: 

• Clients and UI
• Core Java Platform
• Internet of Things
• Java Virtual Machine Languages
• Java and Security
• Tools and Techniques
• Server-Side Java
• Java in the Cloud
• Agile Development

There is no time to waste! The call for papers closes April 15th at 11:59 p.m. PDT  

You will receive a complimentary pass to JavaOne with an accepted talk.

There is a rolling submission process, so submit early!

Compete in the IoT Developer Challenge!


Show the world your embedded Java + Internet of Things (IoT) application for a chance to win a trip to JavaOne 2014! 12 winners will receive a trip to JavaOne 2014, the #1 place to meet world-renowned Java experts. In addition, six students will receive laptops and certification vouchers. Team up and submit the video and code of your project  by May 30, 2014.

Don't know how to start? We are providing eight free online training sessions in March and April. They will introduce you to embedded Java Embedded, IoT, Raspberry Pi and more. Everyone who registers gets a chance to win a Raspberry Pi starter kit.  

Need just a little bit of help? We will provide experts along the way -- regular "office hours." Ask questions on the Challenge forums and check the online resources. There may be some source code and solutions you can use for your project.  

At previous developer challenges, we've had developers:

  • Connect a doorbell to a camera, taking a picture and sending it to a cell phone when someone rings the doorbell.
  • Help blind people figure out which recycling container to use ("put it in the blue can" doesn't help!)
  •  Control a toy monster truck from a phone (Monster Truck As A Service!) 
  •  Connect a heart monitor to Google glass so your doctor or trainer can see your heart rate.

Entries will be judged based on their implementation, innovation and usefulness:

  • Quality: a well-implemented project that uses Oracle Java Embedded with computer boards, devices or IoT Technologies
  • Innovation: a new and innovative way of using Java Embedded.
  • Usefulness: a project that meets a business need.
