Oracle is proud to announce that it has become an associate member of Ecma International and is participating in TC39, the working group responsible for the ECMAScript specification that defines the popular JavaScript programming language.

Ecma International is an industry association that develops standards and technical reports in information communication technology and consumer electronics. Its members include companies such as Facebook, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Netflix, and others as well as universities, foundations, and public institutions.

Ecma members work within technical committees and task groups focused on a particular area or topic. TC39 members are JavaScript developers, implementers and academics, collaborating with the community to maintain and evolve the definition of JavaScript. TC39 develops the ECMAScript specification on GitHub and meets every two months to discuss proposals.

Oracle is a major user of JavaScript with products including NetSuite, Oracle Database, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure incorporating support. Oracle also includes an implementation of JavaScript in GraalVM, called  GraalJS — a high performance, ECMAScript compliant JavaScript engine which provides all the benefits of GraalVM to JavaScript and Node.js developers – including language interoperability and common tooling. GraalJS is included in both GraalVM Community and Enterprise editions with its source code available under the Universal Permissive License (UPL).

Oracle joined TC39 within Ecma International as an associate member. Associate members participate in technical committees’ work based on their interest and experience in related matters. By joining, Oracle is looking forward to bringing its extensive expertise in programming languages to the development and evolution of the JavaScript standard.
