Oracle Senior VP Steve Harris on Java's Present and Future

A new article, titled "Oracle Senior VP Steve Harris on Oracle's Vision of Java," summarizes a talk given by Steven G. Harris, Oracle's Senior VP of Application Server Development, on January 24 at the International Oracle Users Group Community (IOUC) Summit. The article offers a detailed articulation of Oracle's view of the state of the Java platform, the challenges it currently faces, and the vision of Java's future.

From the article:

"All of our middleware -- when we talk about Fusion Middleware -- is written in Java," Harris noted. "So here's the message: If Java is not successful, we will fail. We really want Java to be successful, so keeping Java open, and having developers working in Java is really critical to our success."

In that article, I don't see that Java on desktop and web client being mentioned. Wonder if Oracle has any strategy for Java on client side or Java is now only for server development.

Where is Java on desktop and where is Java on web client ? Here is question asked by a new programmer. If Oracle wants to spread Java, there should have a java client strategy. "Is java used for desktop apps anymore? I know applets are pretty much extinct. But are desktop apps being made with java anymore or are ppl just using native code nowadays? I don't really want to learn java if it's on it's way to complete extinction. By the way I am aware of JSPs popularity but that doesn't impress me considering I don't own a website."

Dear Jay, Thanks for your comments -- you are right, the article was not intended to cover everything and there were gaps. Check out JavaFX for Java on the desktop. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javafx/overview/index.html A lot is going on with Java and the web. Check out Julien Dubois's cutting-edge, four-article series that begins here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/java/jersey-part1-159891.html Thanks again, and sorry for the delay in my response. Jan

Hi Jack, Thanks for your comments. To repeat what Steve Harris said -- Java's success and Oracle's success are inextricably bound -- Oracle is strongly behind Java. I think we have many exciting years before us. Jan
