I've so far spent most of my career with technologies from both Sun (remarkably Java) and Oracle (remarkably the Oracle Database), both are the foundations of most systems I've built, so my life will probably just get easier with extra out-of-the-box integration of products and techs I already use.

I hope this "death" turns out to be reincarnation, with most Sun assets just wearing a new Oracle skin but keeping the same soul... and perhaps, even changing Oracle from the inside. A more open Oracle was always a top item in my wish list. No hippie dreams of open sourcing and giving away everything overnight -- hell, even a full public bug database would go a long way... my dream is Oracle in 2010 being as open / community-driven as Sun was, say, in 1996.

I was at Sun for 13 years.

SUNW was the 2nd to last and one of the 2 best companies that I worked for in 37 years in computing. (The other was Computer Usage Corp., my 2nd employer.) The 13 years that I was at SUNW was also the longest that I was at a single company. And, even though I was underemployed at Sun, it was still a great place to work and be a part of.

I started my career at Netscape and fell in love with the company in every way. The technologies, the people, the persona, the work, the excitement, and the ambition. In the transition over to Sun, I thought I'd never feel the same.

After spending the rest of my career at Sun, I've come to feel exactly the same way I felt about Netscape. The challenges I've been presented and the people I've worked work over more than the last decade have greatly shaped me and I was always so proud to tell people that I worked for Sun Microsystems.

Like everyone else, I have no idea what to expect on the move to Oracle or if I will be asked to come along. If I am, I am sure I will discover some of the same feelings and respect that I've had for Sun over my career here -- but Sun and the colleagues and customers I've worked with over the years here will always be something special.

Thank you to all of the great and ambitious visionaries that started and shaped this company and gave me a wonderful place to call "home" when I was old enough to venture out on my own path in life. It was a hell of a ride and you all truly did change the world.

My best to all and thanks for all the fish.

If we'd focused on the desktop like Apple did, when the movement was more toward less-expensive servers and hadn't dropped x86, which was the blunder of blunders and not stifled so much innovation in the later years with bureaucratic nonsense, we'd probably be in a very different position right now. How could we have failed to monetize Java properly, which Adobe essentially did with ActionScript? So rigidly did we adhere to "big iron" and shun the stuff that would have made us \*popular\*, that big iron became big irony.

Thanks for nothing, Jonathan, that's two companies in a row you've driven into the ground. And yet you'll walk away richer than many of Sun's employees put together, and thus probably consider this result to be a success. Major, major suckage, dude.

At least there's still time for China and Russia to block the takeover, though... here's hoping!

Nos queda el enorme legado de todo lo que hizo y esta gran frase "the network is the computer"

Posted by Marco A Rojas on January 21, 2010 at 07:59 AM PST #

Sun Microsystems was indeed on of the greatest companies ever. Jonathan will be remembered for open sourcing the whole software/hardware stack so that at least none of the engineers who worked at the company will have wasted their time. In other companies such a takeover could all so easily sent their work to the dustbin of copyrighted material. Imagine a great musician - a Mozart perhaps - working for some owner who then one day turned around and just sent burn all his work. This is not what happened. And yet all too often this is indeed what does happen in the software industry.

The source is open and Sun will keep shining way beyond the end of the company that leased its name. The engineers who built it may not be rich in dollars, but they will be remembered!

The artwork says it all. Sad to say goodbye to a great company.
I was at Sun for 20 years and it was in some sense less a company and more a culture. Perhaps that was part of the problem. The people were great. Sun provided an amazing and transforming workplace.

James - Don't let me forget to thank you.
thanks for NeWS - it did rock! I remember enthusiastically arguing that we should include Hopkin's NeWS debugger and HyperNeWS in our ambassador sessions.

thanks for Java! It transformed the world!

and best wishes to you and those of you that are still with Sun[/Oracle].

A big heart felt thanks to Sun and all the guys at Sun. As someone said before, my whole professional existence is on the foundations of Java. Sun has been amazing, churning out innovations one after another. Sadly it was developers who appreciated but not the general customer. May this 'demise' be a new beginning of more bright challenges.

Lastly, RIP Sun Microsystems

Sun brought us deficient technologies like Java and made the idea JIT compiled languages mainstream. I don't believe this deserves any laud.

They created a status quo in the areas of programming languages and technology that will have an impact for the next twenty years.

Their technology blocked out innovation, research and made progress nearly impossible. They made the world think that OOP is synonymous with Java and made imperative programming prevailing paradigm.

See ya in another life, guys. :) I have a long history with Sun and regret to see that something that once seemed a promising development after many unnerving battles against a "don't care" attitude seems to come to a grinding halt in the wake of this merger.

Still, it ain't over yet. Make sure the management knows that it's the individuals that do the work, not the company. Change them and you change the outcome, and the outcome is all the customer cares about.

Fan mail from a flounder:

August '86, Mike Gallaher and I visited you at Sun in Mountain View, ostensibly to integrate your changes with UniPress Emacs. We met David Rosenthal, Mitch Bradley, Owen Densmore and John Gilmore, and I wrote my first PostScript code and crashed my first NeWS server by resizing the terminal window really small. Mike and I smoked a doob in the car outside your house, went inside, and I was honored that your cat let me touch him.

[...]

Posted by Don Hopkins on January 21, 2010 at 08:35 PM PST #

[...]

Summer of '87, I was working in Building 1 as Mitch Bradley's summer intern. I would ride my bike down Frontage road along 101, smoke a doob in the blackberry bushes by the creek along the way, and visit the NeWS team in your office in Palo Alto.

Summer of '90, I took a job at Sun to work on NeWS, after turning down a job at Xerox PARC because of their pre-employment urine test (which I took and passed). Robin Schaufler advised I work in the Multimedia Group because Warren Titleman would stifle me in the Window Systems Group, but then ironically Warren moved over to run the Multimedia Group and stifled us all. Sun dumped NeWS, so I freshened the air in Steve MacKay's office with a aerosol can labeled "F_ck Off", and left to play SimCity.

No regrets: it was a fun ride, I met lots of great people, and it changed my life!

So when are you going to rewrite NeWS in Java, just for old times sake?

You were always far ahead of the curve (even if you decomposed it to conic sections): NeWS was like AJAX, but with PostScript instead of JavaScript for programming, with PostScript instead of DHTML for rendering, and with PostScript instead of XML for data representation.

感谢Java给我带来的一切。希望Oracle善待之...

Posted by vambad on January 21, 2010 at 11:11 PM PST #

Oh well ... I got to know Sun Microsystems at an early stage by accident becasue i had to visit a scanner company which was located on the other street side.

I had nice discussions with Andy and John, checked out the Sun Developers Conference for years before it turned into mighty JavaOne. I sat next to Bill Joy before he announced Java, heard him proposing "The network is ..." some years earlier.

Looking back is used quite a ton of Sun technology in quite all of my projects. Starting with BSD on the Sun Workstation, later Solaris (starting as Slowaris). Worked with SPARC CPUs and chipsets from LSI Logic for a while.

Used Java from day 1 or so till today (Android...). Using MySQL all the time (you payed to much i think). Talked to Scott, James and all the others over the years as member of the press to write interviews and articles. Saw the number of office buildings in Mountain View next to Shoreline grow and later go down. Saw the headquarter in Palo Alto at San Antonio road getting filled with people and then being destroyed for another building project.

I took a cam snapshot of Scott admitting defeat to Larry ("you got this one") during last years JavaOne - a sad moment for him after trying to avoid exactly this defeat for a number of years and it shows in the pic. Will publish the shot soon on my blog after finding it (www.androidian.de).

My favourite quote from Scott: "I would rather give my kids drugs then allowing them to use windows" - he was on stage some 15 or 20 years ago during a press event in downtown San Fran.

Oh well. Scott and all you Sun fellows: I hope you realize that you changed the world (if you would only would have found a way to change the company too!). Oracle: Build japanese gardens. Go sail, nice ships.

cheers from Germany

Juergen

Cheers, Galien! I'd report the error, but, well, :(

Driving over the Dumbarton will never be the same without the cheerful Sun logo to guide me. Although I never worked at Sun, many of my friends did, and of course nearly everything I use is Sun-powered SOMEwhere. My husband would not have his career without Java. You changed the world, Sun. Can't say that very often without it sounding like hyperbole. For Sun, it's almost an understatement.

To the part of Sun that survives being swallowed - please keep at it.

Dear James,

well, I did my first professional steps as technical designer on a SUN SPARC workstation in 1993/1994. For my sorrow my IT career did not contain very much contact with SUN products, but the products I was using, fulfilled my needs at any time.
2 years ago - a little bit late I think - I have chosen Java as my first programing language and - what should I say - I meets by needs again in any case.

I am really sorry about a 'dinosaur' like SUN leaving the IT stage, but I guess life must go on...

My best wishes from Germany

In my first job, we chose Apollo over Sun. But then a year later, we bought a Sun workstation and it was all Sun from then on. A few years later, I came to work at Sun and have been here over 16 years.

It's a ride I never wanted to end, even after the bubble burst, knowing that Sun has always been the "good guy". In a world where politicians are owned by self-serving corporations, and where those corporations will do anything and sacrifice anyone for a buck, Sun (perhaps to its ultimate demise) always had higher ideals and never sacrificed its ethics. Above all, Sun wanted to create a better world. I hope I can find this in my next employer.

Let us play the sog of Depeche Mode "Just can't get enough!" and let us think about Larry hearing it...
...I will always love Java till my own R.I.P. will arrive. Who could ever think of replacing the SUN with some fancy ORACLE?

Java did make a huge difference! Don't waste a thought an the ashes left behind, just carry on the fire!

It looks like the lines of business and the core of technology will continue. This is nice. Too often these acquisitions can only be for grasping additional market share, extraction of IP and divestiture of assets. It also appears to be a good marshaling of resources to be able to compete against IBM, HP, MS, etc.

Best of luck to my friends and former associates! I can only expect the very best from this group whether they stay at Oracle/Sun or they are in new ventures. Some of the finest technologists I have ever met.

Much of the computer and network culture is death now. But a new time is coming. Java, Solaris and others amazing products of Sun, are on good hands. Oracle is not a stupid company, and the portifolio of Sun is a really gold mine.

Thanks Sun, 99% of my knowledge and my passion by technology is your responsibility.

I never worked for Sun, nor hardly ever used their products - in fact I've been competing against them for most of my professional career, winning some and losing some.

But I too, in the past, worked for a company with a soul and a history of innovations and great times etc which got swallowed up, chewed about and spat out by another one which only wanted part of its technology, so on a personal level all you guys at Sun facing an uncertain future have my sympathy - been there, done that etc, I know how it feels.

It's an uncertain time right now, but I hope that every individual who ends up seeking fresh challenges elsewhere finds some worthwhile ones before too long.

Best Time of my working Life was at Sun. Thanks Sun & Everyone at Sun. There will be no other organization as Sun ever......

Looking forward to ...Oracle ! Lets see if they can preserve this great innovation field & harness the technologies from Sun.

I was a customer of Sun way back in the early days and would accept nothing but to work for this great company. That dream came true 16 years ago and I've never regretted it for a moment. I was so proud to tell folks where I worked. Sun was so cool and innovative. If you had initiative, you could achieve it at Sun. It's been sad to experience the slow demise over the last few years. I'll move forward now, not sure what the future will bring. But I'll be looking back over my shoulder at the great people, the wonderful times we had at Sun.

Thank you all who made this amazing accomplishments, the people that changed the world for better - this will be surely missed.

The network is the computer - now Sun will be alive on everyone hearts, minds, and networks.

My association with Sun concluded last year in January. But it still feels devastatingly terrible to see European Commission's unconditional approval of over Sun's acquisition.

It's awful to see a marvelous company and tremendous culture coming to an end.

Hey Sun, you've become part of the history as you gave us all many significant triggers. It's not possible to imagine, where IT would stand today, if Sun would never have been existed, but I'm sure we were not as far as we are today. Standards like Java, J2EE that made rapid development an platform independed applications possible would not have been invented, maybe, maybe Unix would not have been as successful as it is, if Solaris would not exist, maybe the server market would be much less innovative, if SPARC architecture would not have been invented. I guess internet would never have become such an great thing for everybody without Sun.
Our all lifes changed and today nobody who's involved in any kind of information technology, no matters if he/she is an developer or IT architect or if he/she only sometimes writes an letter to grandma and surfs once a week through the internet, can avoid to get in touch with Sun technology.
Thank you for everything SUN.
One word to oracle: Be aware of your responsibility and protect this great part of the IT history. Make profit, earn money, defend your positon at the market and if possible expand, but do not sacrifive Sun within your fights.
PLS apologize for my worse English, as I'm from germany and not in training.

Thanks for wasting $4.1B running a great company such as StorageTek into the ground. That money would have been better spent in Haiti. Hopefully Ellison will show more common sense with his money.
