Beardless! Conspiracies!

I can't resist posting this photo of me beardless. I've had my beard for a lot of years. Neither my wife nor my kids had ever seen me without a beard. Until last week. Pretty frightening! Don't worry, I'm growing it back as fast as I can. I had to cut it off last Sunday because last Monday I went in for surgery to correct a rather severe case of obstructive sleep apnea.

I generally stay away from posting personal stuff on my work blog, but the blog-o-sphere is a great place for conspiracy theorists and worrywarts. I've only been out for a week and I've already received all kinds of odd mail. No, I'm not off pouting about Sun's Open Source Strategy: I'm really happy we're finally getting it done (the only thing I'm unhappy about is how many complexities there are to take care of - don't worry, we'll get it done). No, I'm not job hunting: Sun is fun again!

I probably won't be back at work until after New Years. I've got a lot of healing to do: four large saw cuts in my skull have left me pretty grumpy. Then there's the steel framework holding my skull together while it all heals (no pictures, I promise). The fun part is that for this kinda stuff, serious pain killers come in jugs.

Do you know the connection between the beard of the creator of a programming language and its quality? Some time ago, a guy from Israel blogged about that. Now his blog is offline, but I'm glad to have mirrored that great article early enough. It's really worth reading: From this point of view I hope, that your missing beard will not affect the further development of the Java language. ;-)

obstructive sleep apnea? does a CPAP not help you or are you like myself, annoyed out of sleep by the mask?

Welcome (back) to "the new" James!

Hey James, sorry this is off topic, but I wanted to ask about an application you mentioned at the Atlanta Java Users Group meeting you spoke at (Atlantic Station, Regal Cinemas). You mentioned an app that allowed a user to design a room and view it in 3-D, and it would list a price based on the design. Is that app viewable online? thanks. Steve.

Glad to hear everything went okay. But saw cuts in your skull?!? Holy cow! Now there's a new Halloween story I can tell my kids while pointing a flashlight up towards my chin: "Once upon a time, there was an object-oriented language developer..."

I wish you an excellent recovery, and take it easy of the painkillers.

I thought, because Java move to the new model (Open Source) and this mean your beard = propietary tech, isnt it? You are younger anyway.

Hi. Just starting to learn Java and it looks cool. Hope you recover well so you can continue to inspire.
