Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X8-2 certified for SAP applications

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X8-2 provides optimized performance, efficiency, and affordability for SAP NetWeaver and related applications with a complete, open, and integrated technology stack—including database, management software, operating systems, servers, and storage. Three-tier and two-tier (Oracle Database and SAP) installations are supported to run on Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X8-2. In addition, SAP has also certified the combination of Oracle Exadata X8M running Oracle Database with Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X8-2 as an SAP application server.

SAP on Oracle

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is pre-integrated to reduce the cost and complexity of IT infrastructures while increasing productivity and performance. Each system integrates Oracle's application-to-disk technology stack to reduce the time and cost associated with purchasing, provisioning, deploying, and maintaining SAP infrastructure.

Once deployed, consolidating SAP landscapes on Oracle’s engineered systems reduces data center management complexity, including floor space, power, cooling, cables and conduit. Administrators can use SAP’s BR*Tools and Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center to manage SAP landscapes and SAP infrastructure. Built-in automation features simplify administration tasks and reduce day-to-day management demands.

Less infrastructure, faster results

Recently, Oracle performed a very successful proof of concept (POC) with a large Brazilian retailer running its SAP ECC and NetWeaver workloads on Oracle Exadata X8M and Private Cloud Appliance. The results demonstrated the combined capabilities of the Exadata X8M platform with Private Cloud Appliance vs. Dell and HPE servers with HPE 3PAR All-Flash Storage: a 66% increase in sales and distribution transactions while running on 30% less infrastructure with a greater than 50% reduction in execution time.

The POC used Oracle Exadata X8M to run the Oracle Database while Private Cloud Appliance was used to consolidate all the physical SAP ECC applications running on legacy Dell and HPE servers. The Exadata X8M and Private Cloud Appliance were connected via 10Gb Ethernet. This configuration took full advantage of the high performance and designed-in optimizations of Exadata X8M running Oracle Database and the multi-node scalability and efficiency of Private Cloud Appliance for SAP ECC and NetWeaver.

Certification details

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance can be used in SAP NetWeaver environments when the following conditions are met:

  • Minimum use of Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance Release 1.1.3
  • Up to Oracle Private Cloud Appliance Release 2.4 (2.4.1 and higher) based on version of Oracle VM 3.4.x (3.4.6)
  • The following OSs in VMs are certified and supported for use in SAP environments:
    • Oracle Linux Release 8.x with UEK, Oracle Linux Release 7.x with UEK, Oracle Linux Release 6.x with UEK, Oracle Linux Release 5.x with UEK
    • Oracle Solaris 11 x86, Oracle Solaris 10 x86

Follow the SAP installation notes to prepare the OS to run SAP products. More details are posted in SAP Note 2052912: SAP Software and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA).
