Google vs. Bing: What do you think?

Thanks to Jonathan Gershater for pointing out a site provided by blackdog.ie that allows side-by-side comparison of Google and Bing search engines.

For my first test, I searched the term "Identity Management" on both engines and observed a few interesting things in the top ten results:
  • Wikipedia, that bastion of Internet truth, is the first item in the results list.
  • Oracle Identity Management was second and fifth on Bing, but was aced out by Ash's Identity Management Rantings on Google.  Congratulations, Ash!
  • Sun Identity Management came in after Oracle on Google (an interesting fact, considering the pending merger), but alas, didn't show up on the Bing list.
  • Both engines included Novell and Quest, but only Bing showed Microsoft.
  • The "Discovering Identity" blog didn't make the top ten list on either site. Grrr!

Robin Wauters posted a more in-depth review in Yesterday's Washington Post.

I suppose these and other inconsistencies will keep Search Engine Optimization experts on their toes as Microsoft tries to mount a serious challenge to Google's search supremacy.

By the way, with its picturesque mountain landscape, you've got to admit that Bing wins the search engine beauty contest.

SSOCircle Federating to Google Apps

As my colleague Pat Patterson reported earlier today, we are holed up in a windowless conference room in the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas for the FAMFest 2008 event. There is immense brain power in this room!

During a few minutes of downtime, Pat showed me the good work done by SSOCircle in leveraging OpenSSO to establish federated linkages to a wide variety of service providers. To test the system, I established an SSOCircle account and linked directly to the suite of Google apps as "mgd@ssocircle.com." OpenSSO handled all the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

I verified that I could send and receive email as "mgd@ssocircle.com" via Google email and link my ssocircle.com calendar to my personal Google calendar. Great little demonstration of the power of federation to provide SSO to multiple SaaS applications.

Love/Hate Relationship with Google

I recently had an interesting discussion with a telecommunications executive about Google. He loves the way Google creates demand that increases the percentage of potential subscribers who buy his broadband Internet services; he hates Google's penchant for giving away services for free. Most of all, he hates Google's avowed ambition for "world domination."

"Will Google get into the wireless telephony business?" I asked.

"No, the high cost of installing and operating a mobile phone business is far too expensive," he said, "even for a cash-rich company like Google."

But he was quick to point out that Google's bluffs in that direction have already caused Verizon and AT&T to announce they are opening their networks to non-proprietary phones. The Open Handset Alliance and Google's intention to bid in the 700 mHz spectrum auction next month has the big carriers churning.

Isn't competition interesting?
