Be afraid when a company becomes technology-driven

You know it will turn out poorly when a company becomes more technology-driven rather than customer-driven. There comes a time when every successful tech company gets too big and starts to design based on what can be done with technology rather than what should be done with technology.

Here's a San Jose Mercury News piece by Chris O'Brien talking about Google's identity crisis.

See:

SJ Merc piece: Google's identity crisis

Here's a quote:

it's hard to explain to someone exactly...
 Google's mobile operating system, Android,
...and why it's better than or different
 from Apple's iPhone?
...
These new products have the whiff of
 engineers building things for other
engineers, rather than you and me. This
ought to be raising some giant red flags
 at the Googleplex.
So, true. So, true.

What is this obsession with google that you have? ;-)

Hi Airlan,

No obsession. This is the first post about Google in my blog since 2.5 months ago on May 1, 2009 when I posted about Google being sued over the Android name. So, if I'm posting a blog post about Google 5 times every 12 months, that's not really an obsession, is it? :-) If I posted about Google 200 times per year, now that would be an obsession.

Besides, when there are bad things that Java ME developers should watch out for, and this being a Java ME blog, I point it out, no matter where the bad things originate from.

The truth is out there. Picture me as a Java ME advocate who tries to cut through the marketing haze and fog caused by hype, to help Java ME developers spot the real potholes and pitfalls. :-)
