Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu Workshop @ Sun

I have been meaning to post this blurb on the Ubuntu workshop that was held at Sun but got side tracked by JavaOne.

The friday before JavaOne (May 4th) - Mark Shuttleworth and Ubuntu engineers came to present a workshop on Ubuntu. We (Tom, Barton and myself) met the team early morning. I am not an early morning person :-) but managed to get there an hour early as I was not going to miss meeting a guy who has gone to space :-).

There were about 50 engineers in attendance. Mark presented an overview of Ubuntu and quickly moved to talking about getting software into Ubuntu. The meeting was highly interactive and informative.

I presented for about 5-10 minutes about our experience delivering GlassFish into Ubuntu.

I met other engineers from Ubuntu and put faces to the names - I have spent the last 6 months working with some of them.

My big takeaway:

Mark gets OS and software! You bundle all the software that users may need and deliver it to them in the best manner and you win customers over.

Very soon Ubuntu will have all the software that you want delivered in the least painful manner (amongst all OS's).  We can already see that this is translating into big wins for them (Dell bundling)

Established OS's should start paying attention to them sooner than later or run the risk of being pipped to the post!

Hopefully we have the six month release cycle and apt-get model for Solaris (Now that Ian Murdock is here :-) - this may be possible ).

Comments:

Congratulations on getting GlassFish into the default Ubuntu config, with simple apt-get updates. By the way I think you mean "least painful" or "most painless" :-)

Lol - I just took away Ubuntu's USP :-). I have corrected - thanks for pointing it out.
