The Force and the Medichloreans

OK. So... I have to say that I'm extremely upset at what George Lucas did with Star Wars episodes 1, 2 and 3. I hate the incoherences, the stupid scenario elements... and I've hated more than anything else the medichloreans...

It's been a long time since the movies were published... yet, this morning, in my shower, I thought (yes, I think in my shower) about this (no idea how the thought came up)... and figured this. Why does nobody talk about medichloreans in episodes 4, 5, 6 and then they seem to pop up out of nowhere in 1, 2 and 3?

To me, it seemed, initially, like Lucas was afraid of some religious lobby and decided to turn what initially was a mystical energy, verging on the religion (the Force) into something purely biological due to symbiotic activity. And frankly, that's the lousiest, most cowardly attitude I could imagine. And honestly, I still think there is something to it.

But at least, I've come up with an explanation that could reconcile everybody. Episodes 1, 2, and 3 take place decades before 4, 5, 6. At this time, the Force might not have been completely understood. And they noticed that people with high medichlorean counts were strong users of the Force... So they assumed that the medichloreans were responsible for the Force.

20 years later, the Jedi are in exile, but research has progressed with technology. Cloning has generated new categories of beeings. And discoveries have been made. It happens that medichloreans are, actually, not responsible for the Force (which remains a mystical energy with religious connotations) but they are a marker. They are beings that are attracted to users of the Force. They will develop more strongly in beings that make heavier use of the Force. They feed on, and crave, the Force manipulated by these beings.

So indeed, 20 years earlier, when they would measure medichlorean counts, they might think that this is what is reponsible for the presence of the Force... when it was actually only an indicator the the being's mystical abilities to tap into this life energy of the universe.

Well... Now that I'm somewhat happier with the medichloreans, I can go and tackle my Saturday morning shopping under the rain. I wish I could "Force-deviate" rain drops to stay dry, but I fear my medichlorean count is too low. Not a good sign. :)

Comments:

My favourite Luke Skywalker / Darth Vader joke goes: Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are furiously battling, light-sabres clashing in the winter twilight. “Luke”, breathed Vader. “I know what your getting for Christmas Luke” Luke battles on ignoring him. The battle is getting ever more frenzied - light-sabres swinging wildly. Again Darth says: “Luke, I know what your getting for Christmas Luke” Luke, still trying to ignore him, battles on. And again Darth says: “Luke, Luke, I know what your getting for Christmas Luke” Luke, breaking away from the battle for a moment asks, “How do you know what I've got for Christmas ?”. "Luke", Vader replies, “I have felt your presents, Luke”.

+1 Gilles! Definitely needed to post these thoughts a day earlier though - it being "May the Fourth", and all that...
