Oracle Beehive and IRM

Just out of the session at Oracle Open World on Beehive and IRM. I think these 2 products make a fantastic combination. The capability of sharing extremely sensitive documents between users is known for a long time. My friends at Cyber-Ark Software have been doing it for quite a few years now.

The issue I have with this Oracle combination is that it is windows targetted. The IRM client/plugin for desktop, which provides great functions like preventing copy/paste, printing, re-saving the documents, only runs on Windows...

In Europe, where many (if not all) of the governments are progressively moving to open source (Linux desktops, OpenOffice.org productivity suite...), this basically locks them out of that market.

Comments:

Gilles, good to know you were able to see Beehive and IRM working together. You are right that there needs to be solutions for the Unix based desktop. Unfortunately when you look at the big numbers, the Linux and Apple platforms still have a very small penetration in the enterprise. This is however changing and Oracle is committed to delivering a unix solution, unfortunately we can't comment on when this might be.

Hi, Simon!

Indeed... big numbers... but there's also strategy (and given your last sentence in your comment, I'm sure it's for that reason). Supporting Unix environments isn't just a question of numbers of client workstations... it's a question of surviving in specific markets. Public sector in EMEA is very much an open source playing field. If you want to be present there, your solutions, all of them, need to either BE open source, or at minimum be open source friendly and run on the common open source platforms.

Glad to read that Oracle is going towards the unix market for the desktop too! Can't wait to see it and play with it!
