Windows/Samba printing from OSX 10.3

Since we are becoming an all laptop family with one remaining PC, a shared printer is a must. You would think that all of this is pretty simple with OSX but this is not necessarily the case. Most of this information was from a website that I ran across. I will summarize the steps I took to finally get this working:

  1. Dowload the latest GIMP drivers. I just bought a EPSON R300 Photo printer and the 4.2.7 GIMP drivers have support for this printer.
  2. Open System Preferences -> Print/Fax -> Setup Printers
  3. NOW the critical piece... click the +Add Printer while holding down the (alt/option) key. This will unlock an "advanced" option
  4. The "Device" pull down under the advanced option, will reveal a "Windows Printing via SAMBA" option.

Comments:

cups seriously put linux/solaris/anything with cups on the machine with the printer. The printers then just work magically on the mac. I Have cups on my home and work networks and on the mac and on linux the printers just show up its fantastic
