Oracle/Sun Performance Factors

Recently, I have done a few presentations for local customers on Oracle/Sun Performance. I used a presentation originally developed for an internal performance round-table. This original presentation was created by Doug Miller, Vincent Carbone, and I. I changed it around a little for customers. I hope you find this useful.

Hi Glenn, Great presentation, i recognized some of the material from your SuperG slides. We had a bried talk about something totally else on SuperG between some sessions and that is Extended Accounting, have you made any testing with that lately? (you mentioned that earlier tests on S8 had been a huge disappointment). Ive made a nice setup for extended accounting built on Menno Lageman's script published in http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0505/819-2679.pdf (S9 and S10) and basically just turned it on without any complaints but it would be interesting to see if you had any figures about how much performance im sacrificing by doing that :P Best Regards Kenneth

I have not profiled the performance hit associated with extended accounting on S9/10, but it would depend on the workload you are running. Since enabling/disabling is fairly easy and low risk, I would just do some measurements on your workload. The hit will be seen as extra cycles to update internal accounting structures, so expect to see a difference in overall CPU utilization. As long as you have idle on your machine, then the only effect on users would be an increase in response time. Take Care, Glenn
