Mozex - External Editor for Blogs/Wiki ect...

I have been looking for an easier way to edit blogs and Wiki with a text editor. I use this mainly for the spell checking aspects. The Mozex plugin works with Firefox and allows you to specify an external editor to edit text boxes. When you save the document, it puts the contents into the text box. You can configure a "hot-key" to start editing or simply do a right mouse click.

On OSX, you have to use the "open" command in-order to run Aqua apps using this plugin. This is configured in the Tools->Extensions->Preferences.
   /usr/bin/open /Applications/TextEdit.app %t

Newer versions of Firefox include an inline spell checker. I have tested it on 1.5 on OSX and 2.0beta on Solaris.

Photo sharing made easy

The search is over... For sometime now, I have been looking for a way to easily share a large amount of photo's with a large group of people. My personal website restricts me to 50MB which doesn't cut it. Finally, after being tasked with taking pictures at my son's swim meet, I got serious and found a good solution from smugmug.

Smugmug allows me to create and organize galleries and doesn't limit my disk space! People can download FULL resolution pictures without charge or order prints from Smugmug. There is even an application which allows me to upload directly from iPhoto. The person service cost me just $30 a year.

My site is http://fawcett.smugmug.com

Windows/Samba printing from OSX 10.3

Since we are becoming an all laptop family with one remaining PC, a shared printer is a must. You would think that all of this is pretty simple with OSX but this is not necessarily the case. Most of this information was from a website that I ran across. I will summarize the steps I took to finally get this working:

  1. Dowload the latest GIMP drivers. I just bought a EPSON R300 Photo printer and the 4.2.7 GIMP drivers have support for this printer.
  2. Open System Preferences -> Print/Fax -> Setup Printers
  3. NOW the critical piece... click the +Add Printer while holding down the (alt/option) key. This will unlock an "advanced" option
  4. The "Device" pull down under the advanced option, will reveal a "Windows Printing via SAMBA" option.

VNC for OSX...

I have been using my little 15" G4 powerbook for nearly two years now. Recently I was looking for a way to show someone at a remote site some errors in a java applet. I had used VNC previously on Windows wanted the same on OSX. While the OSX server and viewer are not produced by ATT, the SW has a public license... I found the OSX Server and Viewer pretty easily.
Enjoy,
Glenn
