OpenSolaris Printing - Presto in Flash Demo

Norm Jacobs did a nice job in creating a flash demo on how the Presto project (Automatic Detection/Discovery Printers in OpenSolaris). Even though, the project is in its early stage of its full features, this flash demo clearly illustrates graphically what the project intends to achieve.

Comments:

Looks very good - tell me, is this being expanded to encompass printers plugged into local Sun Rays?

Hi Sean, We plan to make it work on Sun Ray when Sun Ray Server Software is made to run on neveda which is the Solaris 10 Next minor release. We can't deliver this feature in the current Sun Rays because of newer features and technologies which are not available on Solaris 10. -Ghee

The short summary of this is that there is work in progress that will make this work with SunRay, but I don't know what the time frame is. It will require little or no change to the current OSPM (desktop applet) component for it to work, but it does require SunRay to register it's devices with HAL, HAL to associate it's devices with the correct SunRay sessions, and D-BUS to transport messages to the right SunRay session. That in itself poses some interesting problems to be solved. I talked to Artem from the Tamarack team last week and he is working on them with the SunRay team. -Norm
