Phase I of Presto supports auto-detection of local USB printers were integrated into Nevada 69. The response has been positive. The work has since been continued for Phase II of Presto which is to auto-discover network printers. The work for Phase II really come in 2 main parts,
(1) The System level support for auto-discovery of network printers, SNMP support was integrated by Norm into Nevada 77.
(2) Desktop GUI to expose and access to the Network printers being implemented by Evan, Halton and me based on the grand UI design provided by Calum (with inputs from Wendy Phillips and Norm). This is a pretty sizable project, but we hope by the end of the project to achieve:
o A Unified GTK+ GUI for all the printing tools on the Desktop
o Auto-detection and auto-discovery as set out by Presto
o The new Print Manager tool is capable to support both Solaris Print System (now) and CUPS (future) with appropriate backends.
As we are heavily into implementation of the Print Manager at this stage, we would like to demonstrate a pretty novel concept called Printer Groups. This feature is pretty much driven with its root in Sun's internal setup (thousands of print queues) and mobility requirements of current day users (office/home/customer sites). User can use the Print manager to create two types of arbitrary printer groups, namely:
o Static group which is a list of printers that user selects by hands
o Dynamic group which is a list of printers selected by a set of printer's attributes.
The two Flash demo simply demonstrates these two printer group concepts:
