OpenSolaris not selected by GSOC 2008

I am rather disappointed that GSOC (Google Summer of Code) 2008 have not selected OpenSolaris as one of the Open Source community to participate the programme this year. Rahul is the bearer of the bad news. The complete list of Open Source communities that made GSOC 2008 is here. Rahul thinks OpenSolaris is too big a project to be there. He suggested next year we should choose "Indiana" or "DTrace" instead.

It's such a pity that OpenSolaris itself not making it, I am saddened that my printing related proposals are now left on the long list of things to be done :(. Also missing a opportunity to be part if the mentoring experience. Well, we can always try again next year.

Comments:

Consider the selection criteria for Summer of Code. While choosing OpenSolaris would have many benefits for OpenSolaris, it would have fewer benefits for the FOSS community as a whole. I don't mean that as an insult against OpenSolaris; the same thing applies to some random CMS/blog software, or many other random organizations.

Google has a limited number of organization slots and a large pile of organizations to choose from. Given the choice, do you really believe OpenSolaris should get a slot in preference to another organization that doesn't have a major corporate sponsor and matters more to people not directly involved with it?

(And please don't take my last question as a reason to say "but $SOME_ORG got accepted and OpenSolaris $SOME_CRITERIA more than $SOME_ORG". Many reasonable selection criteria exist, and I only mentioned a few.)

Hi Anonmynous,

I agree that many FOSS community will benefit more than OpenSolaris in the GSOC. As OpenSolaris already gotten some competition money from Sun like $175,000. Though I can see there are many communities have strong corporate sponsors behind them also got selected.

I guess this really boiled down to what is the primary criteria for GSOC intends to achieve and what are the selection criteria.

You might want to check out what the Linux Foundation is doing; some of their work dovetails with your proposals.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the pointer to linux-foundation, it is very useful. See if I can track their progress or talk to some of them.
