cups-pk-helper would not be on Opensolaris

Just saw Vincent Vuntz's blog on a fine-grained control for printer related operations on system-config-printer based on Policy Kit. That is the Print Manager for CUPS on a number of distributions including OpenSolaris. Tim Waugh has also blogged about this here

Unfortunately, OpenSolaris users will not be able to get this feature though since PolicyKit is not part of OpenSolaris.

Comments:

Note that you can probably reuse a good part of the cups-pk-helper code if there's something similar to PolicyKit in OpenSolaris. The code interacting with cups is well-separated from the code implementing the dbus interface. You'd probably also need a system-config-printer patch, but that should be doable too.

And if this works fine, we could possibly tweak cups-pk-helper to ship the OpenSolaris version instead of the PolicyKit version when building on OpenSolaris.

OpenSolaris 2009.06 ships PolicyKit 0.5.11 aka SUNWpolkit (though it might not be compatible with cups-pk-helper).

Vincent: Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a closer given what Karl has mentioned. I think the policykit in OpenSolaris uses RBAC.
