Tooltips Like Never Seen Before

In Drag-and-Drop JSP and HTML Code Snippets in NetBeans IDE, I showed the cool new panel that lets you drag-and-drop HTML and JSP snippets into the Source Editor. One thing I didn't mention is something else that's kind of cool about this panel -- the tooltips. For example, when your mouse hovers over the 'Link' button, the tooltip shows you the code that you'll get when you do your drag-and-drop thing:

Okay, so there's nothing too amazing about that. But how about this -- hover over the 'Table' button and check out this cool tooltip:

But this one really takes the cake -- hover over 'DB Report' if you want to see the largest tooltip known to mankind (or, at least, known to me):

    Two things:
    1. Lots of apps have big tooltips, even IDEs like eclipse and idea have nice, rich text, hyperlinked tooltips.
    2. Big tool tips are bad UI.

Hi Adrian -- thanks for stopping by.

In response to your first point: "Cool!" In response to your second point: "True, in general. But in this case, isn't it useful to know what the tags are that the IDE will generate for you? Do you think it should be implemented in a different way? I think it's kind of cool like this -- you move over a button and get to an immediate little preview of what the IDE is going to do for you. If it should be implemented differently, I don't know how."

What I find cool about this, and why I blogged about it in the first place, is that it shows a different usage of tooltip functionality. And, as any reader of this blog knows, whenever I find something unusual or even vaguely interesting -- however trivial -- I tend to blog about it... :-)

To me they seem like a good thing. If you are a newbie such tooltips will help a lot. If you already know the tool you can switch the functionality off entirely. It would be nice if the config options would allow for 2 or more levels of tool tip length. Something like detailed/short/no_tooltips. I think that would satisfy everybody.

Hi Mircea, good to see you like these too. I like your idea of setting an option for the length of the tooltip. I think that right now that's probably not so necessary, since the only place where there are long tooltips is in the code snippet palette. However, if this kind of tooltip becomes more common in the IDE, there should definitely be an option to enable/disable them.
