Tired, like me, of needing to go to File | Open Project to open projects? And tired of the fact that you can't, at least not easily, open files outside of projects? The Favorites window offers some respite, but the Quick Browser in the right of the screenshot below is much better and simpler and more intuitive to use, since it is integrated into the main window and, well, it's really addictive:
Just scroll through the items in the list on the right, click on an item to go a level lower, and click on an item to open it; click the Up arrow to go to a higher level. Type content into the text field and press Enter to confirm. Type letters while the window is selected and you'll jump down/up into the list to the matching name. Images, Java files, text files, PDF files, etc, are recognized, and open in appropriate ways when clicked, while folders that are NetBeans projects not only open when clicked but also get a special icon to make them recognizable while browsing, as can be seen in the screenshot above.
Get it here and install it in NetBeans IDE 7.0 and your life becomes much simpler right away:
Of course, the above can be installed into any application created on top of NetBeans Platform 7.0.
