Matisse for Applets?

Geertjan Wielenga

Not sure how useful this is, but it's just that I haven't heard anything being mentioned about Matisse in the context of applets. So, while working on the 5.0 version of the NetBeans IDE Applet Tutorial, I thought I'd try it out. Here's the result, in the Design mode of Matisse:

When you run the applet, it is displayed in the applet viewer:

And, you can even embed the matissefied applet in a web application and then deploy it and display it in a browser (but I've only got this to work in FireFox):

Not bad, huh. But I wonder if this is useful? Wouldn't this kind of application more commonly be implemented within a JSP page (or servlet)? Still, it's odd that nobody seems to have mentioned this possibility.

If you want to give it a go yourself, take a look at the new and updated NetBeans IDE 5.0 Applet Tutorial.

Hi Geertjan, I actually thought about this and thought it would not be possible because of the layout manager... but right, you can just package it :)

Ah, but it has been mentioned. This testimonial is on the netbeans.org site:

I used NetBeans Matisse to generate a simple applet (http://www.austinjug.org/register). It was much faster to generate the Swing form than the equivalent HTML form! - Rob Ratcliff, Software Consultant with FutureTek LLC

Hi, I'm new in applets and I would like to ask how can I embed applet forms to the web. I'm using netbeans 6.1 andI tried the solutions posted at netbeans.org but it didn't work; it can't display the applet.
