Extending the NetBeans IDE 5.0 Options Window (Part 1)

There's quite a long list of plug-in module tutorials that are scheduled to be done by the time NetBeans IDE 5.0 is released. One of them—the first draft should be done halfway through next week, right after the first draft of the Copy Class Refactoring Module Tutorial that I mentioned a few days ago— will describe how to extend the redesigned Options window. This you can do in one of two ways—either you add a new category to the Miscellaneous section (click the pic on the left to enlarge) or you create an entirely new section (click the pic on the right to enlarge):

And the cool thing is that there is almost no difference between implementing the two scenarios—when adding a category to the Miscellaneous section, you subclass org.netbeans.spi.options.AdvancedOption, while in the other case (i.e., creating a whole new section) you subclass org.netbeans.spi.options.OptionsCategory.

All the details, within the context of a real-world example, as well as all the source code, will be provided in the upcoming tutorial. So, watch this space for an announcement of the draft of the NetBeans Options Window Extension Module Tutorial.
