Resources for VisualVM Plugin Developers

If you are thinking about creating plugins for VisualVM, here are two resources that will hopefully make your life easier. They are both still being reviewed and the APIs that they describe are still under development. But, for the adventurous type of programmer, and those who want to get a general impression of what VisualVM plugin development is all about, here's your chance for an early preview:

  • Getting Started Extending VisualVM. Gives you some background information about VisualVM extensions, shows you how to set up your environment, walks you through a "Hello World" scenario, and gives you an overview of all the VisualVM public packages.

  • VisualVM Developer FAQ. Gives you a complete list of typical questions that can be asked in relation to the VisualVM APIs.

Part of the reason that I'm hoping some people out there will take a look at these is so that I can get feedback. So, feel free to leave your thought here, such as, for example, if the FAQ doesn't include some question that you may have.
