European Radar Software in Java on the NetBeans Platform

Work done for the French Ministry of Defence on the NetBeans Platform was mentioned here in this blog less than a year ago. I've been trying to follow that project, ASTRAD ("architecture and simulation tool for radar analysis and design"), ever since then.

I came across several articles recently relating to this project. One of them, entitled "Use of ASTRAD Simulation Tool in Radar modes development", describes ASTRAD in quite some detail. In it, ASTRAD is defined as "a graphical integrated environment for radar simulation developments".

Its functionality is described in detail, enabling prototyping, specification of preliminary conception, conception, software development, integration, and checking. Where in the previous article, referred to in the previous blog entry from a year ago, the ambition to be a European reference was stated, that ambition seems to have been realized, judging by this concluding paragraph:

"ASTRAD is now a reference workshop for the Délégation Générale de l’Armement (DGA, French MoD) for the current and future Radar simulations and it is deployed in its expertise centers –CELAr and CTSN especially. ASTRAD is now used in the Thales group and at ONERA for the developments of modes and Radar simulations."

Another article I came across is entitled "Intelligent M3R Radar Time Resources Management: Advanced Cognition, Agility, and Autonomy Capabilities". In it is described the functional architecture of radar resources management used for adaptive time budget optimization and key enablers for advanced cognition, agility and autonomy capabilities. But the interesting thing is that... the research work done in the paper is simulated in ASTRAD! A tool named MYRIAD outputs results which are then validated on technical and operational scenarios within ASTRAD. There are some pretty screenshots, such as that of an RDM function, coming from MYRIAD, implemented in ASTRAD:

Another good article that provides a thorough overview of the functionality of ASTRAD is entitled "ASTRAD Platform: A Future Reference in Radar Simulation".
