10 Years @ NetBeans

A few days ago I received a message congratulating me for my employment anniversary of 10 years of service to Oracle. Together with a picture of the commemorative award:

It's great that my pre-Oracle years were included, i.e., I have only worked for Oracle for 4 years, since the Oracle/Sun takeover. I also like the thought that even when I wasn't working for Oracle, I was somehow still working for Oracle, in anticipation of the time when my secret work for Oracle would be rewarded with an actual contract and, some years later, a pen.

However, one constant in the past 10 years has been... NetBeans. That's what I've been working on for 10 long and varied years. What's kept it interesting is a combination of the awesome NetBeans APIs and the great worldwide NetBeans community, from Anton to Zoran. I think Java is a fantastic platform and programming language and I've done everything I can to support and promote it, as well as more recently its integration with the HTML5 platform, via the tooling that NetBeans provides. Because without tools and, indeed, being able to choose between competing tools, a language or a platform is just a big incoherent stack of specifications and other documents. It's been a fun time, here's to the next 10 years.

Congrats Geertjan, great to see that you are being rewarded for your great contributions to the NetBeans community which have helped many (myself included) to get excited about the NetBeans Platform and use it on a daily basis.

Here's to the next 10 years!

Geertjan checking your blog has been a part of my morning routine for over 3 years! Thank you so much for your dedication.

Also that looks like a really nice pen. You should write your autobiography with it!

Well, I've been a NetBeans enthusiast since v5 (jan 2006), so I follow your help and advice since then. Nowhere else I found a more passionate product manager, and your dedication was one of the reasons I adopted NB as an IDE and as a platform in my enterprise and made pressure for the adoption of NB in at least other two software houses: people like you is the most important thing can happen for a product to be successful!

Congratulation, Geertjan!

For sure, like in all jobs, there must have been hard moments but for sure they did not affect your enthusiasm.

Congratulation Geertjan,

Most of the things I learn with Netbeans Platform, It's with your blog and your book about Netbeans Platform. It's too far one of the best book I read about Java Programming in general and about Swing in particular.

I wish we'll have more article about pure development and more book about Netbeans Platform.

You are really dedicated and this help a lot of developer around the world!

Keep it up!
