Update: Solaris on Dell Latitude D830

I have upgraded my Solaris install on my Dell Latitude D830 to the build 66 release of Solaris Express Community edition. I then BFU'd with the latest bits on 6/18/07. So what's changed? I now have a bit more support for my chipset, the 965GM, thanks to a putback for CR 6492209 "Intel 965 chipsets should have AGP support". And, apparently, the VESA driver is now recognizing the GMA x3100 integrated graphics core correctly. But I still don't have a good xorg.conf file to get full resolution out of my display. (I haven't located the necessary specs for the LCD, and Dell was no help.) Anyways, here's a quick run-through of what is working: Wireless (Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG, working with a 'B' access point, at least), Graphics (GMA x3100), USB, Touchpad. Here are somethings I'm still working on: Sound (Should be able to get this going with OSS). My apologies if this post is thin. I well definitely elaborate upon the hardware and steps needed to get it functioning when I'm spending less time configuring this laptop and more time using it. I will also learn how to format these posts so that they are easier to skim ;)

I've got the same HW. If you manage to get the correct resolution working on SXDE 05/07, please let us know.

Hi ivlcic, Still working on it; I'm working still working on the audio, and video...I know that it's actively being worked on, but don't have too much time at the moment to dive to deeply into it. But I'll post more as I figure it out.

Hi! I just received mine and tried S10 11/06 but it fails on reboot (!@\^#%\^&!)... Any updates on what you have working? I got my d830 with a mVidia Quadro NVS 140! How about the next update of S10 (should be 8/07 or 9/07), will it have a chance to work? Thank's for any updates.

I was planning on getting this laptop, as its fairly cheap, and was also
planning on running only opensolaris. I was wondering if Intel 4945bgn
would work?

As unique as Apple's Cinema display might be in the world of 19" to 21" flat panel displays, it shares the same LG.Philips panel as the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW. There happens to be only a single panel manufacturer capable/willing to mass produce wide screen, high resolution flat panel displays for the PC market. Since these two displays are so similar, we thought it only necessary to review both side by side. Several sources have claimed that the 2005FPW had numerous discoloration problems and generally poor image quality. Obviously, if one of our displays demonstrates imperfections, we would expect to see both displays to be flawed. However, the Dell and Apple displays utilize different backlights, so we are open to the thought that there will be some dissimilarities between the units. Let's take a closer look at our 20" displays.

The Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processor in my Dell Latitude D830 is very fast.

I can only imagine how slick it would be with Solaris on it!

Here is a discussion of the performance: http://bit.ly/1UbiZb
