A Billion Files a Month

March 2006 marked an amazing milestone for us -- for the first time, our electronic software distribution systems delivered over 1 billion completed file downloads to our customers (1,087,782,503 files in 31 days, to be exact)!  Note these are individual files, not products -- many products are composed of multiple files. This includes volume from the Sun Download Center, java.com, Java client auto-update requests, and numerous other Sun venues supported by our infrastructure.

I'm happy to say our systems held up perfectly with no slow-downs or issues handling the demand. For now, we still have plenty of capacity to spare, though staying ahead of this rather steep growth curve is a challenge -- volume approximately doubled in the past year! As you can imagine, we're already planning future infrastructure enhancements to handle the projected growth.

We've all heard good as well as critical things about Sun Software over the years, but we must be doing something right. Solaris OS downloads are really picking up, especially after we started offering it with an awesome suite of developer tools and middleware -- all at no charge. Check out the Solaris Enterprise System to try it for  yourself. The popularity of Java continues to grow, too, and it remains our #1 most popular download.

Obviously with this type of volume, Sun's ESD systems are far from a "one-man" (or woman) operation nowadays. I'd like to acknowledge the entire ESD team for their years of effort culminating in a system that can handle a billion downloads a month with room to spare.
