Change your perception on migrating to cloud

A migration to cloud does not need to be painful and time exhausting.

I’m a technical architect with expertise in database and I have worked at Oracle Consulting in Germany for 25 years. In today’s article I want to share an example of a recent customer story where I helped them move and improve to Oracle Cloud.

We were dealing with a customer specialising in the distribution of frozen food, that required a data warehouse solution in order to optimise and expand its business. With just under 10,000 employees operating in 13 countries, and over 4 million customers relying on its services, the organisation realised a better solution was needed to allow concentration on the business rather than spending large chunks of time managing database systems.

Previously, all data was consolidated in a central data warehouse, which had been running on Oracle Exadata and Oracle Database Appliance for several years. This out-dated on-premises solution was no longer sufficient in terms of performance or capacity.

We provided the customer with a proof of concept, demonstrating the performance and ease that an Oracle Cloud solution could deliver, which greatly influenced their decision to move to the cloud with the support of Oracle Consulting.

“Usually this takes some time, but with a little fine tuning and the outstanding performance of the Exadata cloud service we managed to finish the data transfer in less than 10 hours.”

How we made this possible

First things first, we developed a secure network with Oracle Fast Connect, which integrated the Oracle Cloud services into the existing network of the customer. It was important that the users did not have to make changes to their configuration and did not feel any delay in response time when working in the cloud.

Due to the customer’s specific requirements, this project wouldn’t have been successful following a standard method to migrate the databases to the cloud. As a result, a customised solution was needed, following these criteria:

  1. Move the data warehouse to the cloud as quickly as possible
  2. Upgrade the database from version 12c to 19c
  3. Encrypt the database (this is mandatory in the cloud)
  4. Transform to a pluggable database (this is the only option supported in the cloud)

“With proper planning and great collaboration, we can make a migration to cloud very smooth.”

In order to complete this migration, we developed a solution and later the code and knowledge was transferred to the customer. We used Oracle Data Guard because it creates nearly no down-time and does not put any load on the current production system.

All other steps were done in one go using ‘data pump’, which is a method to transfer the content from one database to the other. Usually this takes some time, but with a little fine tuning and the outstanding performance of the Exadata cloud service we managed to finish the data transfer in less than 10 hours.

The customer managed to go live after 6 months without additional help from us, which demonstrates that after the initial setup the Oracle cloud is easy to use. With proper planning and great collaboration, we can make a migration to cloud very smooth.
