Integration On-Premises and in the Cloud: Recap of Oracle OpenWorld 2015

At Oracle OpenWorld 2015, integration was yet again a popular track for many attendees. It is not surprising at all, especially considering that number 2 challenge in cloud adoption is interoperability and integration, following security concerns. We heard this sentiment loud and clear in last Spring’s survey with Oracle users. You can read more about that survey report here

As we have shown in press announcements leading to OpenWorld and during OpenWorld, Oracle is making strong investments that is changing this technology space. Thus, the Integration track at OpenWorld had in-depth coverage not only for SOA Suite 12c’s new release but also Oracle’s integration platform as a service (iPaaS) offering. I would like to highlight a few of them here for you.

First one to note is “Oracle Integration Strategy: Cloud, Mobile, Events, and API Management [CON8056]” session delivered by Vikas Anand, who leads the product management for Integration & SOA. In his session Vikas talked about the 3 key strategic components of Oracle’s Integration offering: API Management, Streaming Analytics, and Core Integration. Vikas talked about Oracle’s investment in and new capabilities for API management, which he followed with a demo of the new cloud service Oracle API Manager Cloud. You can see Vikas's presentation here: CON8056: Oracle Integration Strategy: Cloud, Mobile, Events, and API Management

For those that are considering cloud-based integration solutions, Cloud Integration Best Practices—Customer Panel [CON6373] was the right place to be. With Bruce Tierney from the Oracle Integration product marketing team leading the panel discussion, Calix, Land O’Lakes, Avaya talked about how they addressed cloud integration challenges and what types of benefits they have seen using Oracle Integration Cloud Service (ICS). My favorite quote from this panel was when Ravi Gade from Calix shared that "ICS delivered 6 times faster integration compared to their traditional integration tools". And with ICS they have been able to consolidate multiple integration vendors down to just Oracle. Land O’Lakes’ Scott Nieman shared that they also enjoy "50% faster time to market" due to simplified integration with ICS. Avaya’s Swamy Kuppuswamy mentioned that ICS helped Avaya to "migrate thousands of partner users to Oracle Sales Cloud while keeping legacy system running for CRM functionality". ICS’s real-time synchronization between legacy system and Oracle Sales Cloud made this migration seamless for end users. You can review this session's slides here: CON6373: Cloud Integration Best Practices—Customer Panel

Another popular session on cloud integration was the customer panel focusing on Oracle SOA Cloud Service and Hybrid Integration [CON6377]. In this panel, Oracle Integration customers Sherwin Williams, Hub Group, GE Corporate, and Emerson Climate Technologies talked about cloud-based integration and what impressed them most about Oracle SOA Cloud Service. A clear agreement was around rapid provisioning. Sherwin Williams said SOA Cloud Service provides the ability “to reduce provisioning turnaround times by over 500%”. Customers also mentioned that center of gravity for integration changes dynamically in their business environment. Oracle’s on-premises SOA Suite and new SOA Cloud Service allow them to easily adopt. For slides of this session please check out: CON6377: Oracle SOA Suite Cloud Service and Hybrid Integration—Customer Panel

If you missed any of the Oracle OpenWorld 2015’s Integration sessions I invite you to review their presentations here. You will learn the latest and greatest on Oracle's integration offering.

Stay tuned for more news from the Integration team and new content on our iPaaS offerings.

Steve Daheb - Innovate Faster, Spend Less, and Connect People with the Right Information

Taken from Q&A Interview with Steve Daheb, Senior Vice President, Oracle that was published in Oracle Cloud Platform Newsletter, OOW Edition

The cloud is disrupting how businesses operate, and changing the way people work and access information. Whether you’re just beginning your journey to cloud computing or you’ve adopted it throughout your business, the platform that supports your strategy deserves thoughtful consideration. Oracle Senior Vice President, PaaS, BI, and EPM Business Groups Steve Daheb talks about the pivotal role platform as a service (PaaS) has in helping businesses innovate faster, spend less, and connect people with the right information.

Q. How can customers rationalize their existing on-premises investments with newer cloud investments?
A. Achieving digital transformation is not a question of choosing between cloud and on-premises offerings. The foundation of all information technology is managing information. It’s about mobilizing, securing, and visualizing information. It’s about sharing the information that fuels our applications, and it’s about connecting people and businesses to information. That’s what Oracle has always done better than anybody else. As Larry Ellison says, “Don’t assemble the information, take advantage of it.”

Today, Oracle technology is allowing people to easily collect, access, and share information, and connect their applications with the information that is the lifeblood of those applications. Oracle Cloud solutions coexist with your current investments and allow you to extend their functionality to the cloud.

Q. What is the significance of the hybrid cloud?
A. An information strategy needs to span both on-premises and cloud-based environments because information lives in both places. Information flows through all things, all applications, all devices, and you have to be able to address all of these together. A hybrid cloud strategy enables you to tackle both sides, like a bridge, and allows you to go back and forth between your legacy and future on-premises investments with the cloud. It also allows you to migrate workloads between on premises and the cloud to suit business needs and to not be limited by what technology dictates. It’s a strategy that gives you choice, whether that choice is a private cloud, software as a service (SaaS), or any combination that suits your specific business and industry needs.

Oracle’s integrated portfolio of cloud platform services delivers complete capabilities for application development, integration, content sharing and collaboration, business analytics, mobile technology, enterprise management, and data management. Only Oracle offers this full technology continuum that can enable customers regardless of where they might be on their journey to the cloud.

Q. Mobile is a key trend and many organizations have made significant strides in mobile operations. How do Oracle’s solutions aid with SaaS mobile extensions, rapid application development, and mobile innovation?
A. Mobile innovation is really part of the overall conversation about getting users the information they need, in the context in which they need it. For that to work, you need to manage mobility from a centralized platform that gives mobile developers easy access to everything they need, including services such as user management, offline data, push notification, and storage. You also need a way to cut application development time and ensure consistency. Again, the platform is the key to success. Built-in components such as rapid application development kits and UX templates enable easy mobile extensions for applications.

Q. How do Oracle Cloud solutions offer specific benefits to app developers, IT architects, and line-of-business users?
A. In order to have a platform that meets the needs of all of your stakeholders, you’ve got to understand who the stakeholders are, and speak their language.

For corporate IT and DBAs, it’s about having the same database technology on premises and in the cloud. It’s about speed of provisioning, ease of administration, and ease of ongoing maintenance.

For developers it’s about building rich, high-performance apps. It’s about mobilizing the apps in the back end to support that, and giving them familiar tools to build robust, engaging, and secure apps.

For architects it’s about sandboxing and development testing and managing cloud offerings, on-premises offerings, and mobile technology together.

For line-of-business (LOB) managers, it’s about the information—how can business users easily access and consume information within the context of their business process using innovative tools such as visual analytics, regardless of where they are?

And for business analysts, it’s about giving them information that is connected across disparate sources along with the tools they need to shorten the time it takes to build analytics dashboards, helping them uncover patterns faster, and enabling them to collaborate on that analysis with LOB stakeholders.

Q. What is unique about Oracle’s value proposition?
A. Oracle’s approach is about building an information platform upon which you can run your business; one that spans infrastructure, services, databases, and applications. A hybrid cloud strategy enables you to address both cloud and on-premises needs and allows you to go back and forth, protecting both your legacy and your future technology investments. As a result, you can choose any combination of deployment model based on your business needs. Only Oracle offers the choice of both public and private cloud services. And unlike its competitors, Oracle gives its customers the flexibility to change their deployment model from private to public, or perhaps to bring a public cloud application back in-house.

Mobilize Enterprise Applications using Oracle Mobile Cloud Service at OpenWorld

Enterprise mobility can transform businesses by providing new channels for end user interaction, leading to dramatic process improvements and faster decision-making. But most enterprise services are built for content-heavy, bandwidth-rich web applications, not mobile ones. Wiring up services to mobile apps and managing the accompanying infrastructure (notifications and storage) is cumbersome.

In addition, enterprises building a portfolio of mobile apps face significant challenges: integrating with myriad back-end systems both on premises and with software-as-a-service (SaaS), dealing with multiple security policies across B2E and B2C apps, and increasing the velocity of mobile app delivery.

The cloud is a perfect match for mobile application needs. Oracle Mobile Cloud Service goes beyond simple mobile-first mobile-backend-as-a-service (MBaaS) solutions to provide a robust, enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure to achieve all this and more.

Attend these three sessions to hear more about how you can use Oracle Mobile Cloud Service to mobilize enterprise applications.

  • Mobilize Oracle E-Business Suite Using Oracle Mobile Cloud Service: Monday, Oct 26, 2:45 p.m. | Moscone South—270
  • Extend SaaS Applications to Mobile Using Mobile Cloud Service: Monday, Oct 26, 4:00 p.m. | Moscone West—3020
  • Go Mobile with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne: Tuesday, Oct 27, 12:15 p.m. | Moscone West—3024

There's also a  hands-on workshop (Wednesday, Oct 28, 8:45 a.m. | Hotel Nikko—Mendocino I/II) to learn how to build the next generation of enterprise mobile apps. Discover how back-end developers can easily collect and format information from their vast enterprise infrastructure -- on-premises packaged applications, cloud data, or custom applications -- and present it to mobile developers.

OpenWorld Mobile Showcase

OpenWorld Mobile Showcase

If you’re coming to OpenWorld, make sure you stop by the Mobile Showcase in Moscone South.

Samsung is the lead sponsor for the showcase. This year the showcase is a blend of mobile partners and Oracle teams representing their mobile solutions.

Samsung will be bringing showcasing their mobile solutions and additionally will be showing off their latest mobile devices in the Mobile Showcase lounge.  Stop by, charge up your device and check out the latest phones and tablets from Samsung.  I’m still holding out hope they decide to bring their Gear VR headsets, but since they don’t launch until November, it doesn’t look like they’re likely to steal their own thunder. Oh,well, they will still be showing off some beautiful hardware to checkout.

Other partners include:

Xamarin: They’ll be demoing their build, test, monitoring tools for building native apps for various mobile platforms including iOS and Android. These are 100% native apps with the performance and native experience you’d expect from a native app.  Plus, checkout their demo building mobile apps connecting to Oracle Mobile Cloud Service (MCS) with the Xamarin SDK for Oracle Mobile Cloud Service.  If you’re a C# developer, you’ve pretty much have a great tool for enterprise mobility.

If you’re a mobile HTML5 developer, you should be interested in checking out Sencha, which has a large and established HTML5 community building cross platform apps on their hybrid-mobile framework.

Who else? We’ve got Nokia, AuraPlayer, Sofbang, AirWatch, Syniverse and more.   In addition to the demo kiosk, there will be theatre sessions showing longer, more in-depth demos throughout the day.

Oracle will be showing off Oracle Mobile Cloud Service, Oracle Mobile App Framework, Oracle Mobile Security Suite, mobile development with Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, mobile applications and more.

It’s going to be a great showcase that you won’t want to miss.

Oracle Mobile@Oracle OpenWorld 2015

About a month to go and we're set for another ginormous event - Oracle OpenWorld 2015!

At the center of the tech universe is mobile of course. I mean, what else is transforming our lives more than mobile? What is the one thing you can't leave home without? The first thing you look at in the morning? Do you still use an old fashioned alarm clock to wake you up? Do you check the news, stocks, email, weather, traffic in when you wake up? The last thing you look at in the evening? Did you know the mobile screen has overtaken television?

We've got a lot of Mobile going on at OpenWorld 2015.  In particular, a few highlights from our Focus on Mobile page

You may notice that last one is with Benedict Evans from Andreessen Horowitz. (Andreessen as in Marc Andreessen, the Mozilla, Netscape, World Wide Web - yeah, that guy).  Benedict is a partner with Andreessen Horowitz covering mobile tech in particular. I've been following the A16Z podcasts and his ideas are pretty insightful. Check out Benedict's Mobile Eating the World presentation and his recent blog asserting that the smartphone is the new sun

Anywhoo - lot's interesting mobile sessions, labs and expert meetings going on.  Definitely checkout the Focus on Mobile and Mobile Central pages.  Oh, and stop by the Mobile Showcase at Moscone South to see mobile demos from Oracle and Partners.

Cloud Application Foundation Rocks OpenWorld

Author: Jens Eckels, Princial, Technology Product Marketing, Oracle
Halloween is upon us, so of course we're all wearing orange, carving pumpkins and planning our evenings to either go trick or treating with the kids, stay home and hand out candy or leave town and avoid the neighborhood crowds like a Halloween Grinch. We're also busying ourselves in the aftermath of OpenWorld 2014, where WebLogic, Coherence and other CAF products had a lot for show-and-tell. So, here are some useful links, topics and recaps just for you.

All treats, no tricks.
And maybe a few bad Halloween puns for good measure.
This year, OpenWorld understandably had a cloud emphasis, and the sessions for WebLogic and Coherence were no exception. We explored how you could keep cloud migrations from "goblin" up your IT budget (sorry for that groaner) as you look at moving from on-premise to the cloud. We looked at some of the advantages of using Coherence in tandem with WebLogic as a strategic in-memory data grid, "witch" allows you to process data in real time and offload back-end services. We held developer sessions on how open technologies like Chef and Puppet are helping you provision your infrastructure. And of course, sessions on Java Cloud Service itself that provides an easy way to move your workloads from on-premise into the public cloud (it's not as "terrifying" as you might think).

No one likes hunting all over for information, so we'll help you be a lazy "bones" by provding you some links here. Boo-ckle your seat belts and enjoy the ride through the internet - if you have the "guts."
Editor's note: I am very, very sorry for suggesting we use Halloween jokes. I didn't foresee they would be so awful. Maybe I should have read my horror-scope. Please click the links anyway.

We had a great time at OOW 2014, and we're looking forward to seeing in 2015 to keep you on top of your game.

Developer Recap: Fusion Middleware at OpenWorld 2014

Author: Jens Eckels, Principal, Technology Product Marketing

Oracle OpenWorld is over, but there's still plenty to consume! Much of the developer attention was focused on JavaOne down the road, but that doesn't mean we forgot about you! Here's a brief recap of the goings-on, some sessions you may have missed, and some useful links. Hopefully, you can take a few minutes and get all caught up.
Sessions and Keynotes
Just for you, we had a ton of OOW sessions focused on developing for Fusion Middleware. These didn't just focus on Oracle products, but also how using popular tools and frameworks can help you achieve your goals faster. These sessions focused on everything from mobile development to DevOps, with a specific focus on - you guessed it - cloud. Some useful links:

JavaOne Keynotes
OpenWorld General Sessions

Yeah, yeah, yeah (you might be heard to say).
Those are all big-picture things that don't affect me on a daily basis (you might think).
You're difficult to please, aren't you? Ok, then. Let us try something else...

If you're still assuming OpenWorld isn't right for you as a developer, check out some of the sessions we completed in 2014, and we can hopefully change your mind for OpenWorld 2015.

   • A Guide to Team Development in the Cloud with Oracle Developer Cloud Service
   • Innovating in the Core: Development with Oracle WebLogic Server 12c
   • Next-Generation Oracle WebLogic Server Provisioning: Puppet, Chef, and More
   • Developing Oracle Fusion Middleware Applications in the Cloud
   • Amplify Service Integration Developer Productivity with Oracle SOA Suite 12c

And of course much more. These five examples are a sampling meant to make you hungry for more.
Kind of like good chips and salsa before your tacos arrive.

Events and Free Beer
Still not convinced we care? Well, we do. And we had several appreciation events to show you. We even handed out a lot of, er, libations, to prove it. If you didn't come to OpenWorld 204, you missed out on:

   • OTN parties that take over Howard Street
   • Live bands, including some local favorites
   • The OTN Lounge, where you could send a Tweet, and it gave you beer. Really.
   • Big-picture sessions about mobile and cloud, and how they're changing, well, everything

We had a great time with you at OOW 2014, and we're looking forward to even more developer events in 2015 to keep you on top of your game.

Mobile Highlights from OOW14

Another successful Oracle OpenWorld! We saw drones cruising over Howard St. as well as the America’s Cup trophy and championship sailboat, plus the concert Wednesday night had some great weather. We dialed in the weather. Tthere’s an app for that,  I think it’s called Oracle ExaWeather Control Center  and it's built on Oracle MAF ;-)   There were a myriad of mobile sessions and hands-on-labs as mobile at Oracle continues into into high gear.  Some highlights included:

Oracle Alta User Interface

Used by Oracle’s cloud applications, cloud services and available for customer-developed applications, new UI design principles deliver elegant user interfaces and experiences for web and mobile applications. Quote from the audience: "We were thinking of starting to rewrite our front end in AngularJS, but this new Alta skin looks awesome!”

Oracle Mobile Cloud Service (MCS)- Simplify enterprise connectivity, any app, any data, any data - secure. The demos were great and the hands on labs were packed. Mobile + Cloud = Rethink Mobile

Preview of Oracle Mobile Application Accelerator (MAX) - a cloud-based offering that brings mobile application development capabilities to professionals with no previous software development experience. With Mobile Application Accelerator, program managers, power users, and business professionals can develop mobile applications quickly and visually through their web browser.

Voila! Enhanced Oracle Mobile Application Framework + Oracle Mobile Security Suite. To simplify secure mobile application development, Oracle is deepening the integration between Oracle Mobile Application Framework and Oracle Mobile Security Suite as part of the mobile application lifecycle management process. This integrated approach makes it easier for developers to create a seamless user experience, without compromising security.

Are you developing with Eclipse?  These two were announced prior to OpenWorld, and worth repeating - a new version of Oracle Mobile Application Framework development is now available on the latest update of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse!

And as with the continued adoption and use of Oracle Mobile Application Framework throughout Oracle and its customers, there are 14 New mobile apps for Oracle E-Business Suite!

Need to go hands on with mobile?  Mobile Application Framework Challenge - The Oracle Mobile Application Challenge invites developers to demonstrate how the Oracle Mobile Application Framework can be used to create and/or extend an enterprise application through mobile technology and then deploy that application to a handheld device.

If you weren’t able to make some of these great sessions, don’t worry.  Oracle Technology Network is sponsoring a Virtual Technology Summit covering mobile topics and more.
