Oracle BPM team designed more than 20 best practices and customer sessions, set-up six demo booths and had many hands on labs available to the attendees. For those who were unable to come to Oracle OpenWorld (or missed some sessions), I want to share some ideas, messages, and takeaways from several BPM sessions that ran at this event. Processes are the key differentiators for most of the organizations. Processes provide a competitive edge, efficiencies and desired customer experience to make an organization successful.

To make our customers successful and help them deliver the right customer experience to their end-customers, Oracle is making a significant investment in enhancing the Oracle BPM Suite and adding pre-built solutions called Process Accelerators. Some of these significant enhancements were discussed by Oracle’s Executive Vice President Thomas Kurian in General Session : Accelerate Business Innovation with Oracle Fusion Middleware.

Thomas was joined by Gangadhar Konduri , VP Product Management who showcased some of the cool features like web based Process Composer and Mobile workspaces. We have the entire session recorded for you, you can replay it on-demand.

Another subject of significant interest at OpenWorld was Adaptive Case Management. Oracle Open World Session: Managing Knowledge Worker Processes discussed the key aspects of ACM, its capabilities and how it allows users to manage unstructured Processes.

Oracle Process Accelerators provide quick time-to-solution with production grade, best-practices process solution that is ready to deploy. Details of that session can be read in the blog “Oracle Open World Redux: A Manifesto for Adaptable yet Out-Of-the-Box BPM Business Solutions

Then there were many sessions discussing methodology and best practices to create process based solutions. Some of these sessions are recapped in articles below:

Musings on Fusion Middleware @ Oracle OpenWorld 2013

Author: Howard Beader, Vice President, Oracle Fusion Middleware

Wow, what a week Oracle Fusion Middleware had at Oracle OpenWorld last week, it was most definitely one that we will remember for years to come. This year, for Fusion Middleware, Thomas Kurian, Executive Vice President of Development presented the Fusion Middleware General Session. If you missed it, it is definitely the one to watch and is available here.

When I look back at Oracle OpenWorld, a few key themes consistently come to mind from a Fusion Middleware standpoint:

  • Cloud - We announced 10 new cloud services at OpenWorld including the Java Cloud Service, Document Cloud Service, and the Mobile Cloud Service. The company is laser focused on further enhancing the leading and most complete cloud story with the industry’s most comprehensive cloud portfolio. In addition to the public cloud new services, Oracle also announced the roadmap for Nimbula Director and OpenStack API Integration with Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud which will enable customers and service providers to deploy an open, standards-based Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) foundation with proven breakthrough application performance for Java, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications.
  • Mobile – We issued a couple of great announcements for mobile - one from a mobile applications standpoint, and another announcing the Mobile Cloud Service. As enterprises gear up to enable mobile access to their employees, customers and partners, Oracle is ready with an enterprise-grade solution to help our customers simplify their journey.
  • Business User Friendly Middleware – Another core theme that came across in all the Fusion Middleware sessions was focus on business user experience. Simplifying the tools so that business users who leverage solutions such as WebCenter Portal can easily assemble their own application dashboards, or so that marketers leveraging WebCenter Sites can easily update their external web site presence continues to be top of mind for us.
  • Oracle AppAdvantage – So, have you heard of Oracle AppAdvantage yet? I bet you have! And if you were at Oracle OpenWorld, you wouldn’t have missed how focused we are on this program. This initiative was designed to help all our enterprise application customers accelerate their IT strategies by leveraging a layered IT strategy and a set of entry points to help drive those strategies forward. Oracle AppAdvantage has taken off like rocket globally, with clear enthusiasm from our customers, partners and internally. At OpenWorld, we held an executive luncheon with customers from around the globe sharing their stories on how they leveraged these strategies to ensure their competitive advantage. In addition, we had a very full track with lots if great customer stories sharing their experiences with Oracle Fusion Middleware with Oracle Applications. Amit Zavery, Group Vice President for Oracle Fusion Middleware Product Management presented the general session on Oracle AppAdvantage that was laden with 4 customer perspectives and detailed product demos. Check out the blog here for more details on what was shared.
The above represents just a few top of mind musings on the product content and strategies that were presented at OpenWorld last week. But this is just part of the story; there were a few other truly inspirational events at Oracle OpenWorld that I have to highlight here:
  • The first, of course is America’s Cup. I will be the first to admit that I was never a big sailing fan, but the story of the USA/Oracle team was simply too incredible to not get wrapped up in the excitement. Congrats again Oracle Team USA!
  • The second that comes to mind is the Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards ceremony. This year we held an Academy Awards style event to honor our customer achievements and, I must say the ceremony was spectacular. If you were not in attendance, you can check out more details on our winners here, and if you didn’t submit a nomination this year, I can tell you should already be thinking about it for next year as the organizations that were on stage with us this year truly felt honored.
  • Finally, I have to talk at least a little about the Oracle Appreciation event. Boy, what a concert! Maroon 5 was amazing. Here is a sampling for you die-hard fans. And, following them were the Black Keys who were simply incredible. It was a fun night with lots of friends, colleagues and the Oracle community!

And because saying it a couple of times is simply not enough, I would love to take this opportunity to thank the Oracle Fusion Middleware Product Management teams, the Events team and, of course, my team for all their hard work in helping to ensure another great Oracle OpenWorld!

Inside the OOW Session: 5 Easy Steps to Modernizing Business Applications

Let’s face it – our applications map in the company isn’t clean. We have multiple applications, some homegrown, some acquired, a few other purchased. Chances are there is some overlap in what these applications do for us. We are in a constant state of motion with our applications. Add to that changing business needs, technology disruption with social, mobile, analytics and big data and the ever-evolving regulatory landscape, and we are far from achieving Nirvana with our applications infrastructure.

The question then is how do you extend your applications and enhance the value you provide to your application users, especially customers without having to sneak in brittle customizations within your applications and adding to your application development, maintenance and upgrade cycles?

5 steps! Yes, at Oracle OpenWorld next week, we will walk you through 5 easy steps to modernizing your existing business applications to meet your evolving business needs without having to re-code your applications. Make sense of it all in a scalable, sustainable way.

To prove it, we will have Fred Stern from Flextronics joining us on stage to discuss his very successful implementation and the business impact of doing it the AppAdvantage way.

Join Fred Stern, my colleague - Ajay Khanna and I at Oracle OpenWorld as we discuss this some more. Be sure to add this session to your Schedule Builder.
