Data Integration 12c Raising the Big Data Roof at Oracle OpenWorld

Author: Dain Hansen, Director, Oracle

It was an exciting OpenWorld 2013 for us in the Data Integration track. Our theme this year was all about ‘being future ready’ - previewing one of our biggest releases this year: Oracle Data Integration 12c. Just this week we followed up with this preview by announcing the general availability of 12c release for Oracle’s key data integration products: Oracle Data Integrator 12c and Oracle GoldenGate 12c. The new release delivers extreme performance, increase IT productivity, and simplify deployment, while helping IT organizations to keep pace with new data-oriented technology trends including cloud computing, big data analytics, real-time business intelligence.

Mark Hurd's keynote on day one set the tone for the Data Integration sessions. Mark focused on big data analytics and the changing consumer expectations. Especially real-time insight is a key theme for Oracle overall and data integration products. In Mark Hurd's keynote we heard from key customers, such as Airbus and Thomson Reuters, how real-time analysis of operational data including machine data creates value, in some cases even saves lives. Thomas Kurian gave a deeper look into Oracle's big data and fast data solutions.

In the initial lead Data Integration track session - Brad Adelberg, VP of Development, presented Oracle’s Data Integration 12c product strategy based on key trends from the initial OpenWorld keynotes. Brad talked about how Oracle's data integration products address the new data integration requirements that evolved with cloud computing, big data, and changing consumer expectations and how they set the key themes in our products’ road map. Brad explained why and how fast-time to value, high-performance and future-ready solutions is the top focus areas for product development. If you were not able to attend OpenWorld or this session I recommend reading the white paper: Five New Data Integration Requirements and How to Meet them with Oracle Data Integration, which provides an in-depth look into how Oracle addresses the new trends in the DI market.

Following Brad’s session, Nick Wagner provided in depth review of Oracle GoldenGate’s latest features and roadmap. Nick discussed how Oracle GoldenGate’s tight integration with Oracle Database sets the product apart from the competition. We also heard that heterogeneity of the product is still a major focus for GoldenGate’s development and there will be more news on that front when there is a major release.

After GoldenGate’s product strategy session, Denis Gray from the PM team presented Oracle Data Integrator’s product strategy session, talking about the latest and greatest on ODI. Another good session was delivered by long-time GoldenGate users, Comcast.  Jason Hurd and Amit Patel of Comcast talked about the various use cases they deploy Oracle GoldenGate throughout their enterprise, from database upgrades, feeding reporting systems, to active-active database synchronization.  The Comcast team shared many good tips on how to use GoldenGate for both zero downtime upgrades and active-active replication with conflict management requirement.

One of our other important goals we had this year for the Data Integration track at OpenWorld was hearing from our customers. We ended day 1 on just that, with a wonderful award ceremony for Oracle Excellence Awards for Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation. The ceremony was held in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Congratulations to Royal Bank of Scotland and Yalumba Wine Company, the winners in the Data Integration category. You can find more information on the award and the winners in our previous blog post: 2013 Oracle Excellence Awards for Fusion Middleware Innovation…

Selected for their innovation use of Oracle’s Data Integration products; the winners for the Data Integration Category are Royal Bank of Scotland and The Yalumba Wine Company. Congratulations!!!

Royal Bank of Scotland’s Market and International Banking division provides clients across the globe with seamless trading and competitive pricing, underpinned by a deep knowledge of risk management across the full spectrum of financial products. They handle millions of transactions daily to keep the lifeblood of their clients’ businesses flowing – whether through payment management solutions or through bespoke trade finance solutions. Royal Bank of Scotland is leveraging Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator along with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and the Oracle Database for a variety of solutions. Mainly, Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator are used to feed their data warehouse – providing a real-time data integration solution that feeds transactional data to their analytics system in minutes to enable improved decision making with timely, accurate data for their business users. Oracle Data Integrator’s in-database transformation capabilities and its ability to integrate with Oracle GoldenGate for real-time data capture is the foundation of this implementation. This solution makes it such that changes happening in the analytics systems are available the same day they are deployed on the operational system with 100% data quality guaranteed. Additionally, the solution has helped to reduce their operational database size from 150GB to 10GB. Impressive! Now what if I told you this solution was built in 3 months and had a less than 6 month return on investment? That’s outstanding!

The Yalumba Wine Company is situated in the Barossa Valley of Australia. It is the oldest family owned winery in Australia with a unique way of aging their wines in specially crafted 100 liter barrels. Did you know that “Yalumba” is Aboriginal for “all the land around”? The Yalumba Wine Company is growing rapidly, and was in need of introducing a more modern standard to the existing manufacturing processes to meet globalization demands, overall time-to-market, and better operational efficiency objectives of product development. The Yalumba Wine Company worked with a partner, Bristlecone to develop a unique solution whereby Oracle Data Integrator is leveraged to pull data from Salesforce.com and JD Edwards, in addition to their other pre-existing source systems, for consumption into their data warehouse. They have emphasized the overall ease of developing integration workflows with Oracle Data Integrator. The solution has brought better visibility for the business users, shorter data loading and transformation performance to their data warehouse with rapid incorporation of new data sources, and a solid future-proof foundation for their organization. Moving forward, they plan on leveraging more from Oracle’s Data Integration portfolio. Terrific!

In addition to these two customers on Tuesday we featured many other important Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate customers. On Tuesday the GoldenGate panel included: Land O’Lakes, Smuckers, and Veolia Water. Besides giving us yummy nutrition and healthy water, these companies have another aspect in common. They all use GoldenGate to boost their ERP application. Please read the recap by Irem Radzik.

On Wednesday, the ODI Panel included: Barry Ralston and Ryan Weber of Infinity Insurance, Paul Stracke of Paychex Inc., and Ian Wall of Vertex Pharmaceuticals for a session filled with interesting projects, use cases and approaches to leveraging Oracle Data Integrator. Please read the recap by Sandrine Riley for more.

Thanks to everyone who joined with us and we hope to stay connected! To hear more about our Data Integration12c products join us in an upcoming webcast to learn more. Follow us www.twitter.com/ORCLGoldenGate or goto our website at www.oracle.com/goto/dataintegration

For those who were unable to come to Oracle OpenWorld (or missed some sessions), I want to share some ideas, messages, and takeaways from several BPM sessions that ran at this event. Processes are the key differentiators for most of the organizations. Processes provide a competitive edge, efficiencies and desired customer experience to make an organization successful.

To make our customers successful and help them deliver the right customer experience to their end-customers, Oracle is making a significant investment in enhancing the Oracle BPM Suite and adding pre-built solutions called Process Accelerators. Some of these significant enhancements were discussed by Oracle’s Executive Vice President Thomas Kurian in General Session : Accelerate Business Innovation with Oracle Fusion Middleware.

Thomas was joined by Gangadhar Konduri , VP Product Management who showcased some of the cool features like web based Process Composer and Mobile workspaces. We have the entire session recorded for you, you can replay it on-demand.

Another subject of significant interest at OpenWorld was Adaptive Case Management. Oracle Open World Session: Managing Knowledge Worker Processes discussed the key aspects of ACM, its capabilities and how it allows users to manage unstructured Processes.

Oracle Process Accelerators provide quick time-to-solution with production grade, best-practices process solution that is ready to deploy. Details of that session can be read in the blog “Oracle Open World Redux: A Manifesto for Adaptable yet Out-Of-the-Box BPM Business Solutions

Oracle OpenWorld 2013 - Highlights from Oracle Cloud Application Foundation with WebLogic, Coherence, and more….

Originally Published on  Cloud Application Foundation Blog

Author: Ruma Sanyal, Director, Oracle

Interest in Cloud and Mobility drove significant focus on Oracle Cloud Application Foundation products at this year’s Oracle OpenWorld . In case you missed it, here is a recap:

Oracle WebLogic Server received significant limelight in Executive Vice President Thoman Kurian’s keynote -- The Oracle Cloud Platform: Database as a Service. Java as a Service. Complementing the existing Oracle Cloud Platform Services, the new Oracle Java as a Service provides full control of dedicated Oracle WebLogic Server clusters, supports any Java application, and gives users greater flexibility and choice over their services.

In the classic roadmap session by CAF vice president of product management Mike Lehmann, Mike focused on the recent 12.1.2 release. The session provided insights into how Oracle is evolving this infrastructure to be the next-generation application foundation for its customers to build on in a private cloud setting, Oracle's vision, product plans, and roadmap for this server infrastructure, and how it will be used in the rapidly maturing cloud infrastructure space. We hope the presentation helped you make key decisions about running your enterprise applications on Oracle's enterprise Java server foundation.

Oracle Coherence provided a many sessions at OpenWorld, focused around improving the customer experience with real-time data processing and application scalability to meet mobile and cloud demands. Many customers were excited to learn that Coherence can now update the data cache in real-time, delivering on the expectations of instantaneous updates. All sessions were well-attended, with several customers noting that the 12c release of Coherence was helping them solve strategic problems for both their organization and their own customers.

Developers, Mobile and Cloud!

Chris Tonas kicked off exciting development trends in his General Session “Emerging Trends in Application Development” which covered Oracle’s perspective in addressing the development opportunities in mobile and cloud environments. Mobile continues to be a dominant topic and Chris discussed real-world applications built with Oracle ADF Mobile, a Java based hybrid-mobile framework that helps Java developers build hybrid-mobile apps for iOS and Android from one code base. Oracle OpenWorld 2013 - WebCenter Highlights

Originally Published on Oracle WebCenter Blog

Author: Christie Flanagan, Principal Product Director, Oracle

As we come to the end of Oracle OpenWorld 2013, I thought I’d reflect on some of my favorite aspects of this truly dynamic event:

Oracle WebCenter Customer Appreciation Reception

This year’s Oracle WebCenter Customer Appreciation Reception was one of our best and definitely a highlight of my trip. The reception moved to a great new venue in 2013, San Francisco’s Old Mint, a National Historic Landmark where the Oracle WebCenter community had the chance to mingle and make new connections. Many thanks to our partners aurionPro SENA, Bluenog, Fishbowl Solutions, Fujitsu, Keste, Redstone Content Solutions and Tekstream for sponsoring!

Oracle WebCenter Customer Success Stories

This year’s lineup of customers participating in Oracle WebCenter sessions was truly impressive. Our various WebCenter customer panel and conference sessions gave everyone the chance to hear real world experiences with various WebCenter products whether Content, Portal, or Sites. Standouts for me (coming from the WebCenter Sites side of the house), were the travel and hospitality brand, Choice Hotels, electrical and network infrastructure solutions provider, Panduit, world renowned football club, Real Madrid, and financial services provider, TIAA-CREF. A special thanks to all our WebCenter customers who put their time and effort into sharing their stories with the broader WebCenter community.

The Oracle WebCenter Community

And that brings me to my final and favorite aspect of Oracle OpenWorld 2013 – the Oracle WebCenter community itself. Oracle OpenWorld is unmatched in providing you with opportunities to interact and engage with other WebCenter customers and WebCenter experts from among our partner and employee communities. It was great to see everyone and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Musings on Fusion Middleware @ Oracle OpenWorld 2013

Author: Howard Beader, Vice President, Oracle Fusion Middleware

Wow, what a week Oracle Fusion Middleware had at Oracle OpenWorld last week, it was most definitely one that we will remember for years to come. This year, for Fusion Middleware, Thomas Kurian, Executive Vice President of Development presented the Fusion Middleware General Session. If you missed it, it is definitely the one to watch and is available here.

When I look back at Oracle OpenWorld, a few key themes consistently come to mind from a Fusion Middleware standpoint:

  • Cloud - We announced 10 new cloud services at OpenWorld including the Java Cloud Service, Document Cloud Service, and the Mobile Cloud Service. The company is laser focused on further enhancing the leading and most complete cloud story with the industry’s most comprehensive cloud portfolio. In addition to the public cloud new services, Oracle also announced the roadmap for Nimbula Director and OpenStack API Integration with Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud which will enable customers and service providers to deploy an open, standards-based Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) foundation with proven breakthrough application performance for Java, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications.
  • Mobile – We issued a couple of great announcements for mobile - one from a mobile applications standpoint, and another announcing the Mobile Cloud Service. As enterprises gear up to enable mobile access to their employees, customers and partners, Oracle is ready with an enterprise-grade solution to help our customers simplify their journey.
  • Business User Friendly Middleware – Another core theme that came across in all the Fusion Middleware sessions was focus on business user experience. Simplifying the tools so that business users who leverage solutions such as WebCenter Portal can easily assemble their own application dashboards, or so that marketers leveraging WebCenter Sites can easily update their external web site presence continues to be top of mind for us.
  • Oracle AppAdvantage – So, have you heard of Oracle AppAdvantage yet? I bet you have! And if you were at Oracle OpenWorld, you wouldn’t have missed how focused we are on this program. This initiative was designed to help all our enterprise application customers accelerate their IT strategies by leveraging a layered IT strategy and a set of entry points to help drive those strategies forward. Oracle AppAdvantage has taken off like rocket globally, with clear enthusiasm from our customers, partners and internally. At OpenWorld, we held an executive luncheon with customers from around the globe sharing their stories on how they leveraged these strategies to ensure their competitive advantage. In addition, we had a very full track with lots if great customer stories sharing their experiences with Oracle Fusion Middleware with Oracle Applications. Amit Zavery, Group Vice President for Oracle Fusion Middleware Product Management presented the general session on Oracle AppAdvantage that was laden with 4 customer perspectives and detailed product demos. Check out the blog here for more details on what was shared.
The above represents just a few top of mind musings on the product content and strategies that were presented at OpenWorld last week. But this is just part of the story; there were a few other truly inspirational events at Oracle OpenWorld that I have to highlight here:
  • The first, of course is America’s Cup. I will be the first to admit that I was never a big sailing fan, but the story of the USA/Oracle team was simply too incredible to not get wrapped up in the excitement. Congrats again Oracle Team USA!
  • The second that comes to mind is the Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards ceremony. This year we held an Academy Awards style event to honor our customer achievements and, I must say the ceremony was spectacular. If you were not in attendance, you can check out more details on our winners here, and if you didn’t submit a nomination this year, I can tell you should already be thinking about it for next year as the organizations that were on stage with us this year truly felt honored.
  • Finally, I have to talk at least a little about the Oracle Appreciation event. Boy, what a concert! Maroon 5 was amazing. Here is a sampling for you die-hard fans. And, following them were the Black Keys who were simply incredible. It was a fun night with lots of friends, colleagues and the Oracle community!

And because saying it a couple of times is simply not enough, I would love to take this opportunity to thank the Oracle Fusion Middleware Product Management teams, the Events team and, of course, my team for all their hard work in helping to ensure another great Oracle OpenWorld!

Recap of Yesterday’s General Session: Transform the Enterprise - Optimize Application Investment with Fusion Middleware

Congratulations to Oracle Team USA! An unforgettable comeback and victory!

Amit Zavery, Group Vice President of Oracle Fusion Middleware, took the stage at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco yesterday. Amit’s general session focused on the many benefits Oracle Applications customers can achieve with Fusion Middleware.

Amit introduced a layered approach to developing an IT strategy. This begins with standardizing and consolidating core enterprise applications, followed by extending and enhancing business value across three layers:

1. Simplify IT - Minimize complexity, Improve performance and lower cost with secure and reliable systems across the entire enterprise.

2. Differentiate - Create greater business agility with process extensions, cross- application process orchestration and seamless integration.

3. Innovate - Drive business innovation by connecting people, information, and applications anywhere, anytime.

The session was co-presented with four customers: Pella Corporation, McAfee, World Fuel Services and University of Melbourne. Each customer shared their success leveraging Fusion Middleware to maximize their investment in Oracle Applications. Here is a review of each customer’s presentation:

Online Engagement

Rick Hassman, Director of Corporate Applications with Pella Corporation, spoke about the customer insight and alignment between business and IT and the competitive advantage this has created for Pella. As Pella moved along their applications journey, they realized the need to expose their applications to customers and internal team members. By leveraging SOA, ADF, BI, WebCenter, CRM On Demand, E-Business Suite, and PeopleSoft, Pella powered their new, online real-time appointment scheduling application. They also leverage Fusion Middleware for their 360 view of the customer which is used by sales and customer service. By pulling all customer interactions together, combined with external information, team members are well informed prior to each customer interaction. As result, Pella’s customer satisfaction ratings have risen.

Business Process Agility

McAfee’s VP IT Service Delivery, Ron McCutchen, told the audience about the realization that its order management system, based on three separate legacy systems, was unable to keep pace with growing order volumes. This prompted a significant project to create a new global order processing platform. Today, McAfee’s highly available 24/7 order processing platform is integrated with Siebel, and was built in BPM Suite with ADF front end and WLS clustered infrastructure. The order management solution integrates the quoting system and SAP ERP, Siebel CRM and other applications. What is most striking about this solution are the business benefits: 20% reduction in TCO through technology simplification and consolidation; 15% increase in productivity; and 98% cycle time improvement for small orders.

Enterprise Mobility

Massoud Sedigh, CIO with World Fuel Services impressed attendees with his company’s plans to adopt Oracle ADF Mobile to provide a Fuel Finder application accessible to aviators anywhere, anytime and on any device. Integrated with E Business Suite 11i and Oracle Database 11g, the Fuel Finder mobile app will become a one stop solution for locating pricing information, and order placement and fulfillment -- all from one iPad application. The benefits expected include better customer retention by bringing the convenience of the mobile app right into the cockpit. World Fuel Services also anticipates an increase in fuel sales because of the higher visibility of fuel offerings.

Business Transformation

Last, but not least, CIO from University of Melbourne, Sendur Kathir, discussed how Fusion Middleware serves as the platform for his organization’s business transformation. With a broad Oracle stack including Oracle Applications (E-Business Suite), Oracle Engineered Systems (Exalogic, Exadata), and Fusion Middleware (WebCenter, IDM, SOA, BPM, BI) University of Melbourne has delivered a comprehensive platform for a new generation of students and researchers.

Further underscoring the value of combining Oracle Applications with Fusion Middleware, three demonstrations were featured:

1. The first demo showed how to extend Oracle E-Business Suite to a mobile device. Using ADF Mobile, an order management application, running from an iPad, integrated with Oracle E-Business Suite and also leveraging BPM, WebCenter and Identity Management provides enterprise mobility.

2. In the second demo, Fusion Middleware drove on premise and cloud integration. Simulating a customer service call to a cable provider, Oracle SOA and BPM enable Oracle Applications integration to a single platform spanning cloud, mobile, and on-premise.

3. The third demo showed the quote to fulfillment business process, with a focus on Fusion Middleware powering self service engagement and the next-generation user experience.

Amit also highlighted Exalogic OVM templates and the latest benchmarks for Oracle Applications on Oracle Exalogic, and performance optimizations Oracle In-Memory Applications.

As you may have guessed, a lot of content was covered in 60 minutes. The key takeaways from yesterday’s sessions:

-- Strategies to help transform your enterprise focus on three themes: Simplify, Differentiate, and Innovate.

-- Customers choose Oracle Fusion Middleware to gain incremental value from their investment in Oracle Applications.

-- Exalogic is an optimum platform to consolidate applications deployments and enhance performance.

2013 Oracle Excellence Awards for Fusion Middleware Innovation

We joined together on Monday afternoon at Oracle OpenWorld in the beautiful Lam Research Theater at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco to celebrate the winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation.

Our relationship with our customers and partners is a relationship whereby we provide ongoing technology innovation and our customers and partners take that technology and teach us new ways to innovate.

Striving for success is what drives Oracle and its customers and partners to continually discover innovative uses for Oracle technology and to deploy successful and groundbreaking solutions and best practices.

This program started 7 years ago with the intent of recognizing customers for achieving significant business value through innovative uses of Oracle Fusion Middleware. When we first held the awards in 2007, we received 68 submissions across just a few categories and products.

For the last 7 years we have recognized and honored close to 150 award winners spanning multiple categories across Fusion Middleware. This year, we received over 260+ nominations from Oracle Fusion Middleware customers across 8 categories. This year we selected 18 winners. The award is global and every year, we are grateful to receive submissions from around the world.

The success of the Oracle Excellence Awards for Fusion Middleware Innovation program is due to the support of our Oracle leads, product teams, sales teams, marketing, senior management, judges, partners and user group communities. However, the true success of the award program has always been our customers that have taken the time to submit their nominations and compete intensely for the chance to become a recognized leader of Innovation.

Congratulations to all our Fusion Middleware Innovation Winners for 2013!
