Oracle Mobile Platform Breakfast Seminar Series - Australia

With the escalating usage of smart phones, we are already seeing mobile phones replacing cameras, cash, maps, remote controls, boarding passes and more.  Smartphone and tablet sales continue to accelerate. IT has a clear opportunity to work with line-of-business leaders to establish enterprise, cross-channel mobile strategies

With keen interest in Mobility from the Australian market, we recently hosted Breakfast Seminars in Sydney and Melbourne with 60+ attendees in each location, to provide an update on the Oracle Mobile Platform, and showcase some of the mobile innovations from local Australian customers and partners.


With a highly engaged and interactive audience in both Sydney and Melbourne, Chris Muir, Senior Principal Mobile Product Manager at Oracle, and Ruben Garcia Mohedano, ‏Business Integration & Mobility Advisor at Oracle provided an excellent overview of the Oracle Mobile Platform – Keynote Presentation, addressing many questions on Mobile Security.

The Oracle Mobile Platform delivers one single platform for our customer’s multi channel needs, supporting any device, any application, any data and secured with the leading enterprise security solution. The mobile platform has all the components and tools required to build cross platform device-resident hybrid apps that share the same code base across mobile OS and form factors, tools to integrate with backend data and services, comply with existing enterprise security policies and extend for mobile specific security requirements and provide enterprise grade deployment. 


Oracle Gold Partner Colab Managing Director, James Stocks and Echo Entertainment Portfolio Manager Hospitality, Sarah Robinson discussed Cel+ Mobile implemented at Echo Entertainment.  Colab was tasked to mobilize key Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) processes and integrate third party applications through the provision of a single access point and enterprise mobility platform. Colab delivered the Cel+ Mobile application which provided key business processes via smartphones, tablets and desktop with seamless integration to their Virtual Roster application.

The key challenge faced at Echo was to architect a solution that allowed data and services from highly restricted and secured internal systems, that were currently available only to those connected within the corporate network, by either being onsite or connected through a VPN. Oracle WebLogic Server was utilized with a standards-based security approach. Web Services were written using the REST protocol to expose E-Business Suite functionality which provided the performance required for the mobile application. Oracle E-Business  Suite SDK for JAAS authentication was used to authenticate and authorize users. 

From an organizational perspective, there were varied technical capabilities across the organization. Many users did not have English as their first language, and many users could not access or did not have smart phones or tablets and were unfamiliar with the general concepts, navigation and the user interface. This demanded that the Cel+ Mobile user experience be highly intuitive with an easy to use interface that adopts common design patterns found in consumer applications. Additionally, Cel+ Mobile was rendered for desktop so that those users that did not have a smartphone or tablet could still access the system from a home computer.

Oracle ADF, with its MVC architecture, was the framework selected for the web-based application and this made the transition to ADF Mobile a seamless process where the experienced developers were able to reuse their existing Oracle ADF skills and apply them to Oracle ADF Mobile development. Oracle Gold Partner Intelligent Pathways Founder and Lead Architect, Gary Crosby, discussed Jetstream, implemented as application system “RED” at Qantas. Jetstream is a mobile solution that enables rapid guest recognition, fast customer recovery and electronic operational reporting in the air.  Jetstream has three applications, Cabin, Forms and Ground, which connect to the Jetstream Ground Server.

Jetstream Cabin integrates with reservation and departure systems, as well as CRM, operations and crewing systems to bring current data into the cabin. Jetstream Cabin enables electronic capture of passenger and operations data in the air, and sends this back to ground systems on completion of the flight. Jetstream Forms enables users to gather and share data via an electronic form on a mobile device. Completed forms are submitted back to the airline for operational reporting. Jetstream Ground is a mobile application used by staff within the airport. It provides users with real time flight and passenger information at the kerb side, lounge, check-in and gate.

The solution uses Oracle SOA Suite to implement the Jetstream services, running on Oracle WebLogic Server, and empowers cabin crew to deliver seamless one-on-one customer service. Check out the presentation or watch one of the Qantas customer testimonial videos – YouTube | YouTube.

Bundle patches are collections of controlled, well tested critical bug fixes for a specific product  which may include security contents and occasionally minor enhancements. Self Service and the Digital Revolution

Gartner’s ‘Taming the Digital Dragon: The 2014 CIO Agenda’ is now available on our AppAdvantage home page. It’s a very insightful look into what’s driving IT Leadership in 2014 and for the second consecutive year it explores the dynamic of two separate yet complimentary goals for CIO’s: Renovating the core of IT and exploiting new (digital) technology and trends.

Yes, the digital revolution has arrived to enterprise IT and has matured beyond hope and hype. It’s now reality and will drive a competitive advantage for those that embrace it and the reverse for those that do not. That much is certain.

On the other hand, this revolution heralds the end of the client server era after a 30 year run and today’s single instance ERP-centric architectures will need to evolve. To be sure, ERP is still, and will continue to be the dominant transactional platform within an enterprise, either on premise or cloud based. However, too many enterprises are burdened with heavily customized and overly rigid ERP architectures that simply cannot adapt sufficiently on their own. Gartner’s view of Postmodern ERP captures this need perfectly. 

To be sure, the tandem goals of modernization and digitization rely upon one another for success, but how can this be accomplished? Too many organizations are stuck in a holding pattern and don’t need to be. In fact, this has been explored previously in these blogs and is an underpinning of Oracle AppAdvantage, a layered Framework that offers the opportunity to modernize while delivering new digital capabilities. Good in theory perhaps, but how about in practice. What is an example of ways in which an enterprise can ‘re-imagine the core’ while simultaneously exploiting new digital technologies? Something with demonstrable business results and measurable ROI?

For that, look no further than self service, either B2B or B2C. But this isn’t the self service of even 5 years ago, which was still typically limited to those processes and data that were resident within a single application such as ERP. Self Service today, fueled by proven SOA technologies, deliver an automated, managed and fully informed digital experience resulting in significant cost savings as well as the increased customer awareness and satisfaction that comes from a true 360 degree view of the enterprise. With full security and process management. And, of course, mobile enabled. Access Anytime, from Anywhere, by Anyone. The Reference model below provides a blueprint for enterprise-wide self service. Once in place and delivering solid ROI in its own right, enterprises can then leverage the reusable technologies and skills that were created to expand their digital revolution.

In the News: CFO as a Technology Evangelist?

What comes to mind when you hear the word CFO?  Historically, CFOs have often been thought of as individuals who deeply involved in battling costs, economic volatility and economic complexity in their company.  However, there is a shift underway in the role of the CFO.  Oracle and Accenture co-sponsored a global study with Longitude Research entitled, "Empowering Modern Finance: The CFO as Technology" which involved 1,275 CFOs, senior finance executives and line of business executives from organizations around the world across multiple industries.  In a nutshell, the conclusion is that the modern CFO is not just battling The Street, grappling with internal organizational challenges but is also a technology evangelist who recognizes the value of digital and cloud technologies for the finance function.  Don't take this the wrong way -- there is still a gap between ambition and reality.  However, finance departments are recognizing the need for cloud capabilities to do a better job of budgeting, planning and forecasting.  To read more about this interesting study and its findings click here

Oracle CloudWorld: The Recap

There was a buzz in the air at Oracle CloudWorld in San Francisco last week at the Westin on Market Street.  It was a great opportunity to hear Oracle's strategy for the Cloud across Applications such as ERP, HCM, Eloqua and other as well as Oracle's strategy for Mobile.  There was something for everyone with a floor dedicated to demos and numerous sessions for all interested.  CloudWorld in San Francisco is just one of several locations worldwide where this event is being held.  CloudWorld is slated to take place in Melbourne, Moscow, Beijing and Chicago - so if you missed last week, not to worry, it's coming to a city near you!

CEO, Larry Ellison delivered an energizing keynote in the afternoon to a packed audience.  He focused on Oracle's investment in HCM and why it sees this is an important initiative and one that requires additional staff resources and greater innovation in order for us to maintain our leadership position in the market.  Following his keynote, there was a good amount of time set aside for Q & A from the audience.  Among the many sessions, the one not to be missed was delivered by Ray Wang, Principal atConstellation Research. He had a very well attended session that covered what a sales cloud-related product should entail (feature, function and address which business needs) .

The Next Frontier: Oracle Mobile

  

Oracle Cloudworld was a rousing success supported by insightful keynotes, hands-on-demos, real world case studies and not to mention ample opportunities to network and make new connections.  The Mobile keynote preceded CEO, Larry Ellison's much awaited keynote and the audience was all ears to hear Oracle's story around this hot space.  Rimi Bewtra, Senior Director-Product Marketing, Mobile and Fusion  Middleware explained Oracle's mobile strategy as having two aspects to it: enabling people to build their own applications or leverge Oracle's mobile applications, all supported by a robust Mobile Platform with Mobile Security.   Oracle Mobile Solution is a complete offering with a choice of out-of-the-box mobile applications or a mobile platform that allows you the flexibility to develop your own mobile applications wrapped around mobile security. Oracle Mobile Solutions has three primary components: Mobile Applications, Mobile Platform and Mobile Security. Mobile Platform provides a common technology framework for building, integrating, securing and managing mobile applications on any device.

Intuit Makes Learning Easy - Fusion Middleware Style

Intuit has always focused on improving the lives of more than 50 million people with its flagship products and services such as QuickBooks, Quicken and TurboTax.  Continuing with their focus on helping people take charge of the finances, they were looking to deploy a SaaS based solution, specifically a learning platform geared toward accounting professionals. They chose Oracle for assistance with ensuring that the platform can support a large number of users, provide 24/7 availability, scale effectively and deliver a seamless user experience.  In addition, Intuit wanted to be able to deliver courses on a single system via any device - PC, laptop or tablet. 

Intuit was able to train 132,000 customers and awarded 21,000 certifications in fiscal year 2013 and set even more ambitious goals for the next fiscal year.  They laid the foundation to expand their learning offerings on a worldwide scale.  This customer success focuses on enablement and improving the user experience,  but the business drivers for Oracle AppAdvantage can be any of the following: building security across all applications, providing a centralized and standardized identity management, single sign-on across desktop, mobile, social for apps or reducing IT overhead and helpdesk calls by providing online self-service.
