Chalk Talk with John: Application Server Appreciation

Whether running applications on-premise or in the cloud, application servers are unsung heroes of the enterprise - powering our most critical applications. Given how foundational they are, why is it so tricky to communicate the business value of their capabilities?

In this Chalk Talk episode, we visit the communities of Codeaway Vallery and Middleware Fields to understand the benefits that a standardized approach around application servers can provide organizations.

Oracle GoldenGate AppAdvantage in Action at Land O’Lakes, Smuckers, and Veolia Water

Author: Irem Radzik, Senior Principal Product Marketing Director, Oracle

Originally Published on Data Integration Blog

On Tuesday at OpenWorld we had the honor to host a panel with GoldenGate customers: Land O’Lakes, Smuckers, and Veolia Water. Besides giving us yummy nutrition and healthy water, these companies have another aspect in common. They all use GoldenGate to boost their ERP application.

Veoila Water’s Pierre Kerrinckx came from their HQ in France for this panel and spoke to us about the database migration project for their JD Edwards ERP system. Using GoldenGate Veolia was able to migrate from Oracle Database 10gR2 on AIX 5.3 Oracle 10g R2 to Oracle Database Aix 7.1 Oracle 11g R2 and did so with only 2 hours of interruption to JD Edwards end users. Pierre mentioned, the other benefit of GoldenGate was the ability to switch back to the old environment if needed.

Land O’Lakes’ Mark Kohls talked about their use of GoldenGate for their JD Edwards ERP system supporting the Purina business line. Land O’Lakes had to migrate enterprise-wide JDE Xe ERP system to new database and application server platform with minimal downtime to the business. While their goal was to have less than 8 hours of downtime, with GoldenGate they limited downtime to 30 minutes.

Both Veolia and Land O’Lakes used GoldenGate in an Active-Passive fashion, meaning that the new environment was not used simultaneously with the old one, and the users migrated all at once. GoldenGate provides Active-Active migration model too, if the company prefers to do a phased migration and truly zero downtime.

Smuckers's Neal Indermuhle had a different story to share. He talked about operational reporting for their critical Oracle E-Business Suite and how using Oracle GoldenGate helped the company to achieve the near real-time data they need in making critical business decisions. Neil shared that the replication latency averages less than 10 seconds and Oracle GoldenGate Veridata is leveraged to validate synchronization.

I would like to thank Pierre, Mark, and Neal for sharing their best practices, and taking tough questions from the audience. If you would like to learn more about Oracle GoldenGate’s solutions for JD Edwards, E-Business Suite and other key Oracle Applications please check out our new resource center with recorded video presentations and detailed white papers.

Leveraging Data Integration for Successful Cloud Deployments

Data Integration Product Marketing Team Blog

Cloud adoption has been rising in recent years. According to our survey conducted with Oracle users, 38% of the respondents already have implemented a private cloud architecture. It is not surprising if you consider the benefits of cloud computing, ranging from agility and scalability to cost savings. Faced with today’s cost pressures and demand for innovation, companies choose to move to cloud architectures; private, public, or hybrid (consisting of both). And, you may be part of one of the many organizations that already started or plans to move to cloud.

The question we want to tackle is: what happens to your enterprise data when you move to a private or public cloud? In today’s screencast we will be discussing data integration technology’s critical role for cloud.

We invite you to view this screencast part of The New Business Imperative: Social, Mobile, Cloud series to learn more about choosing the right data integration technology for cloud computing, and how Oracle Data Integration products can make your cloud implementation a success.

OpenWorld Recap Day 1: Innovations in Oracle Fusion Middleware, Exalogic, Cloud Application Foundation

So much buzz in a single day. I have to say I was quite blown away with the starting videos by Mark Hurd outlining our success thus far, and then ending with Thomas Kurian in the morning detailing a number of key advancements around Enterprise Manager 12c, Big Data, and Exalytics. The theme of Oracle OpenWorld (if you haven’t been paying attention to our banners) is all about Engineered for Innovation.

Hasan Rizvi during his General Session today discussed such innovations in Fusion Middleware highlighting Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle Cloud Application Foundation which help provide a foundation for Cloud applications, make IT more efficient and business users more productive.

Rizvi outlined how Oracle is the leader in Fusion Middleware, with the #1 position in the market –with over 120,000 existing customers having added 9,500 new customers in the last 12 months.

In fact, Oracle runs on Oracle; running its own applications on Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle invests heavily in integrating its products together into cohesive solutions, reducing professional services costs compared to competition while reducing time-to-market for on-boarding new services from 3 months to 2 weeks.

Oracle also runs its most innovative business software, Fusion Applications, on Oracle Fusion Middleware - leveraging its modern user interface, in context Business Intelligence, integrated SOA, centralized security, and built for on-premise and on-Cloud.

Rizvi also discussed in detail the advantages of Oracle Exalogic,

  • Exalogic provides up to 5X processor utilization advantage for applications: Java EE, 25% processor utilization advantage for standard Linux or Solaris applications.
  • Unmatched throughput, responsiveness and efficiency on Oracle Exalogic: Oracle SOA runs 9X faster, Oracle ADF runs 10X faster.
  • For Business Applications it means better throughput, lower response times, more TPS, more users.

Ultimately that means: Oracle Exalogic provides customers a solution which relies on less hardware and software, is easier to deploy, manage, maintain, while at the same time runs faster.

In fact many Exalogic customers experienced dramatic gains. Rizvi quoted a few important customer examples:

  • Haier: 7X faster than IBM P750/AIX at ½ the cost.
  • Square Two: 9X improved response time with 5X gain in concurrent users
  • Deutsche Post DHL: ¼ rack of Exalogic 360X faster than 600 existing servers
  • Xi’an Software Pak: 22X faster performance than existing systems
  • Banco de Chile: 4X better performance over the competing solution.

In addition, Rizvi outlined new advancements in Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software which are worth highlighting:

  • Elastic Cloud Software now available on newly announced SPARC SuperCluster thereby bringing its benefits to an even larger audience
  • Virtual Assemblies for Exalogic bring together VM images and deployment configurations in order to reduce the costs of rapidly deploying new applications
  • Cloud Management provides complete cloud lifecycle management with automatic scale-up and scale-down along with metering and chargeback
  • Additionally, Cloud Management benefits from deep integration with hardware, software, and applications management to offer automatic, proactive support that monitors the day to day health of the system, provides patch recommendations, and can even contact support automatically when a problem is detected.
  • Oracle VM 3.0 for Exalogic offers the lowest overhead in the market combine with the greatest scalability for x86 architectures
  • Oracle Exabus offers high speed network virtualization, providing direct memory I/O for Java and C++ applications that results in 400% increase in process to process throughput
  • Example Exalogic Benefits for Fusion Middleware Customers: SOA 11g experiences a 9X improvement in response time, improves Tuxedo response time by 7X, and increases throughput of Oracle Universal Content Management by 300%
  • Resulting improvement in response time of sample business processes in Oracle Applications: E-Business Suite 300-800%, PeopleSoft 300%, Siebel 800%, JD Edwards 300%, Utilities Master Data Management 200%, and ATG 300%.

Looking forward to Tuesday? See the Keynote delivered by Dell: 8:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m., Moscone North, Hall D
