What comes to mind when you hear the word CFO? Historically, CFOs have often been thought of as individuals who deeply involved in battling costs, economic volatility and economic complexity in their company. However, there is a shift underway in the role of the CFO. Oracle and Accenture co-sponsored a global study with Longitude Research entitled, "Empowering Modern Finance: The CFO as Technology" which involved 1,275 CFOs, senior finance executives and line of business executives from organizations around the world across multiple industries. In a nutshell, the conclusion is that the modern CFO is not just battling The Street, grappling with internal organizational challenges but is also a technology evangelist who recognizes the value of digital and cloud technologies for the finance function. Don't take this the wrong way -- there is still a gap between ambition and reality. However, finance departments are recognizing the need for cloud capabilities to do a better job of budgeting, planning and forecasting.
