What is OpenID Good For? Lots!

Wondering why OpenID is a GREAT idea? Read this.
Still a cynic? Read this.

The only reason I join some sites is because I can use my OpenID (http://billy.cripe.myopenid.com). Plaxo is one example. The ability for me to take my persona with me and into sites around the web is of inestimable value. The ability for me to maintain a different "persona" or subset of my identity means that I can expose professional information to professional networking sites like Plaxo while allowing more whimsical personal information to come through for sites like Jyte.com.

Now if someone can allow me to input my social connections into my OpenID and take those with me to LinkedIn, Facebook, NING sites and such the world will be a better place.

Comments:

Billy, perhaps in your arena of Enterprise 2.0 there's an even more significant role for OpenID: to be the bridge across the corporate firewall. I'd be a little more extreme and say that Enterprise 2.0 will flail about until OpenID (or something similar) is adopted as core infrastructure. More thoughts at http://tardate.blogspot.com/2008/07/openid-missing-spice-in-enterprise-20.html It needs the enterprise identity management vendors on board though. Oh, that reminds me ... Oracle is one of them! I hope you are championing the cause internally;-)
