Here's a fantastic blog describing why Scott McNealy believes that Open source is good for Sun and its customers While Scott gives five wholesome reasons for supporting Open source, the bottomline sums it up real well. To quote from Jim's blog:
'To summarize, Sun's strategy of making our products free and open is designed to make the entire planet familiar with Sun's products. We then have the opportunity to offer support, services, training and systems for their enterprise computing needs. This helps customers by providing them more choices at lower cost and allowing them to move from one vendor to another more easily.'
The word's officially out.
FOSS.in happening once again in Bangalore. So come December '07, a bunch of open source enthusiasts, contributors, evangelists and users will congregate in the green environs of IISc campus to seriously admire their code. Last year, the list of speaker roster read like the Who's who of the open source community. This year is no different it seems, judging by all the names being dropped in an around the Sun-centric world. We created this group blog to broadcast the buzz in Sun Microsystems, Bangalore. We have a mighty enthusiastic group of engineers, doc specialists and managers who are all set for the action to begin.
Lots of stuff to discuss- the demos, the BOF sessions, the Project days and the Hack center. Last year, simple, sturdy tents were seen dotting the landscape, where the BOFfers aired their views and made new friends in the Open source world. The Hack Center is a new addition to FOSS.in this year. It is a large area which will be open throughout the conference duration, from 9:00am to 7:00pm, where people can get together to work on FOSS projects. The Center will be provided with PCs, power, switched networks and internet connectivity, tables and chairs. The call for participation is out. The D day for submitting your abstracts is October 6th. Come join in the fun! Watch this space and be the foss't to know the inside story! We'll let you in on all the OS communities teaming from Sun to make it all a mind-blowing experience.
