Key moments of FOSS.IN 2008 captured...
WebSynergy is Sun's next generation web aggregration and presentation platform. This platform includes developer tooling and an enterprise grade presentation runtime based on Liferay Portal Server, GlassFish v3, and MySQL. Click here for more information.
Sun organized a ebSynergy BoF. A BoF is an informal session dedicated to a particular topic or technology. Unlike planned workouts that are defined in the agenda, the BoFs are informal events and does not require any advanced planning. Just let the conference organizers know, occupy a BoF "tent", and get going. Those coming to the Sun stall are directed to the BoF tent by a simple white board announcement.
As part of FOSS.IN 2007, a BoF on GlassFish was held. GlassFish is an enterprise-quality Java EE 5 application server that offers advanced clustering, centralized administration, and best-in-class performance built by the GlassFish community. The Java EE SDKs contain the Sun Java System Application Server (Sun's supported distribution of GlassFish). For more information, click here.
The BoF was a success with lot of people attending. Some photos from the GlassFish BoF.
A short (amateur) video of the ZFS BoF held this afternoon.
PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows. It is fully ACID compliant, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stored procedures (in multiple languages). It includes most SQL92 and SQL99 data types, including INTEGER, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, CHAR, VARCHAR, DATE, INTERVAL, and TIMESTAMP. It also supports storage of binary large objects, including pictures, sounds, or video. It has native programming interfaces for C/C++, Java, .Net, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, ODBC, among others, and exceptional documentation.
Read PostgreSQL about page for more information.
Naturally, the PostgreSQL BoF was an instant hit. Guess who conducted the BoF? None other than Josh Berkus, an acclaimed PostgreSQL leader. Click here for a brief bio of Josh Berkus.
Anyone who has ever lost important files, run out of space on a partition, spent weekends adding new storage to servers, tried to grow or shrink a file system, or experienced data corruption knows that there is room for improvement in file systems and volume managers. The Solaris Zettabyte File System (ZFS), is designed from the ground up to meet the emerging needs of a general-purpose file system that spans the desktop to the data center.
Click here for more information on ZFS. Head out to the ZFS BoF tent to learn more about the most advanced file system on the planet.
This white board at the Sun booth says it all! Head out to the BoF tents...NOW!
"I looked forward to the Documentation related talk from Frank Peters - that is an area that could do with some love especially when it comes to providing local language documentation. Additionally, getting an insight into areas like extensions, documentation, macros allows someone to choose what and where to contribute to. A round of thanks to those who came a long way to be part of the Project Day, it was nice to meet old friends and make new ones. I had fun, and I hope that if we can manage the BoF tomorrow it would be fun as well"....This is what Sankarshan, a key OpenOffice contributor had to say in his blog. The OpenOffice BoF indeed proved to be quite useful for those who attended.
Sun's BoF sessions on OpenSolaris and OpenPortal were runaway hits. Open source enthusiasts were seen flocking the BoF tents. The BoFs provide an informal setting for those interested in products or technologies to get together. The BoFs are unstructured, and that makes them more interesting. Further, you get to interact with the engineers who design and develop the product. There is the added attraction of freebies! Can you ask for more?
