2020 will rank among the most challenging years the restaurant and foodservice industry has ever faced. In just three months – March to May – our industry’s workforce went from a robust 15 million to 7 million and lost $120 billion in revenue. Millions of restaurant workers are still unemployed, and the industry is on track to rack-up $240 billion in lost revenue by year-end.*
So, there is a long road to recovery ahead and the game has definitely changed. As restaurants slowly begin to reopen and employees come back to work, they will need to adapt to the “new normal.” Technology will play a key role and both current and future restaurant workers will need to learn new skills and adapt to a variety of new health and operational standards. From online menus and digital marketing to employee and customer health and safety, the restaurant business has become way more complicated.
It’s a lot to absorb, but the team at Oracle Food & Beverage, a major supporter of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), want to help and are offering complimentary technology and system assessments to individual restaurants. They are also helping restaurants make the shift from just offering take-out and delivery to full re-opening.
Other helpful resources include – free COVID-19 employee training videos and reopening webinars and sessions offered by ServSafe and the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurants Rise on-demand educational and resource hub.
Our industry has a long track record of dealing with adversity. We must work together and take this unprecedented health and economic crisis head on. We owe it our family of restaurant workers, customers and the communities where they work and live. The NRAEF and its many supporters like Oracle remain committed to empowering people from all backgrounds with the training and education they need to overcome today’s and tomorrow’s challenges and secure a bright future in our industry.
