How Mobile POS Hardware Helps Restaurants Enhance Service and Efficiency

Dave Galante
Senior Director, F&B Solutions Management, Oracle

As of 2017, nearly 4.5 billion consumers owned a mobile device, and 89% of restaurant operators were considering using them in their businesses. Such statistics from Oracle’s 2019 Food and Beverage Mobility Benchmark Report provide a tantalizing glimpse of restaurant mobility’s potential.

And it’s enormous.

Recently, Oracle Food and Beverage teamed up with SkiftX on a webcast to explore this topic. I was joined by Jeremy Kressman, Research Editor at SkiftX, and Dimitra O’Rourke, Director of Franchise Support and Training for the Broken Yolk Café, and we took a look at how mobile technology is empowering restaurant management and staff to operate more efficiently.

Here are three key takeaways about mobility:

Mobile POS systems enhance guest experience

Personalized service is now expected (and demanded) and is absolutely considered when customers determine where they want to eat. And point-of-sale tablets are invaluable tools to deliver it. With POS devices, servers no longer have to spend time running back and forth to stationary POS workstations, giving them more time to engage with guests.

Mobile hardware increases speed of service

Sending checks straight to the kitchen improves efficiency throughout the restaurant. O’Rourke illustrated this point by sharing the Broken Yolk Café’s technology journey. With the expansion of the business, the café was quickly outgrowing its technology. Because the restaurant only had one point-of-sale workstation, servers often queued to place orders. That forced them to take and send multiple orders at a time, causing backlogs in the kitchen and delaying orders for guests. When the café introduced POS tablets, it immediately achieved an increase in speed of service.

Mobile restaurant analytics makes decisions easier

There are few things more frustrating for restaurant managers than being stuck in the back office, trying to make sense of reports and data. Such agony can be avoided with the right mobile restaurant analytics tools. They simplify data and make it possible to glean insights in real time, enabling managers to quickly address problems or seize emerging opportunities. Best of all, an array of tasks – from evaluating performance to measuring success against forecast to tracking up-to-the-minute KPIs – can be done from anywhere, anytime.

Isn’t it time for you to embrace mobile technology, too? Take a 2-minute mobility assessment to discover how you compare with peers on use and preparedness for restaurant mobility. Don’t get left behind.
