Squeezebox?

A rather off topic post, but considering the audience for this blog, someone might have some suggestions. I'm looking into replacing my stereo system at the moment, the trusty nad seperates that I have are starting to show their age (I got it eight years ago), and takes up just a little too much space. Now on the stereo front I am thinking about a micro system, and I'm torn between Onkyo CR-515DAB, the Teac CRH255 and the Marantz CR-601, but I'm sure I'll reach a decision on one ;).

The real reason for this post is to ask about Slim Devices Squeezebox. Anyone have any experience with this? Looks interesting... but is it worth the price?

Comments:

Yes - they are totally worth the price. I own two of them (see my blog for tips on how to get the software working on Solaris). You can sometimes find them on eBay.

I remember over twenty years ago talking with a friend and saying "why can't one take every album/tape/CD one owns, digitize it, and listen to any song on one's stereo on demand whenever one wants. Today, we can.

I absolutely love my Squeezebox. Imagine being able to listen to any CD in your collection without having to find the CD on the shelf, take it out of the jewel case, and put it in the CD player. Imagine being able to listen to any radio station in the world. Imagine being able to listen to an AM station at night with FM clarity.

Is it worth the price? That's a hard one. Roku's SoundBridge M1001 is $100 cheaper.

That said, since I have one Squeezebox (in my bedroom), I am seriously considering getting another one for my living room.

Cool, thanks for the comments folks - couple of people e-mailed as well, and the consensus is yes, well worth the money.

I own and like the earlier SliMP3; a friend is quite happy with his Squeezebox. Both work quite well and the software certainly is geek-friendly.
