I was very very lucky to have lived in the Bay Area in the 80's and 90's where I got to hear that Oakland Blues sound from the likes of J.J. Malone, Lowell Fulsom, Sonny Rhodes, and so on, mostly at Eli's Mile High Club. One guy that came along and immersed himself in this tradition was Frank Goldwasser, aka Paris Slim because of his francophone roots. I got to be good terms with Frank, even convincing him that he ought to give me lessons. Well, he did: exactly one (we worked on Freddie King's instrumental hit "Sidetracked"), at the end of which he informed me: "There, we're done. Now you know how to teach yourself." Best lesson I ever had.
