An Exalytics Conversation
By Bob Post-Oracle on Apr 24, 2012
What might a conversation with a user unfamiliar with Exalytics sound like? Let's take a look….
What is Exalytics?
Exalytics is fundamentally a computer processing accelerator; achieving significantly enhanced performance by eliminating time-consuming disk I/O (by using very large memory storage) and by linking many processing modules together to address business questions.
Why does this technology approach matter?
Because time consuming (or slow) responses to questions (queries) are often a result of how long it take to get the data to answer a question (disk I/O). It’s the physical movement from disk to the user interface.
So, Exalytics ‘asks the questions’ in advance (that reflect all users ‘most common questions’) and puts that data into memory (where the computer ‘answers’ the question) eliminating what is technically much slower, the disk I/O of the original question.
The ‘ANSWER’ is now in memory and memory is FAST.
So, my data is available more quickly and my answers are in memory. Just how much improvement will I see?
Results will vary, but our early users and our own benchmarks suggest improvements of 5X to well over 10X faster are the norm.
So, the question I used to wait 10 – 15 seconds (or longer) to be answered, may be answered in 1 second using Exalytics?
Yes. And so will the next question and the next and so on. We like to say that this offers users “speed of thought analysis”.
So, speed of thought analysis will also let me answer some of the questions I didn't want to wait around for in the past?
Right, that's the intention and it will let you answer questions you hadn't considered asking before. It opens up new ways of looking at your business and impacting your business processes.
So, you can see that the ‘accelerator’ part of Exalytics is very powerful and will let YOU answer more questions. But it can also empower ALL the members of your organization. It can allow your organization to enjoy a more self service oriented environment and not depend upon IT intervention.
So, more end-users can use the system that we (sort of) restrict them from because we use analysts to run lots of reports.
Yes, that's right. Now, your analysts can focus on new analyses also using the power we discussed earlier. They can focus on more advanced and predictive analytics and models to optimize the performance of your business enabling your users to gain even more powerful insight.
I think I can see how Exalytics can help me run my business better; to achieve better results.
Yes we believe Exalytics can help you accomplish that.
And, my IT guys; what will they say about this new Exalytics box?
Well, the simple answer is, when they complete the deployment of Exalytics, they will say they understand why they need fewer computers to manage the reporting and analysis requirements of your organization, that they need fewer people to manage the tuning of this environment and have achieved a lower total cost of ownership.
