Exadata Persistent Memory Accelerator: Partnering with Intel on Optane DC Persistent Memory

To address the increasingly complex needs around data centric workloads, Oracle has partnered with Intel to bring solutions that can move, store and process data better and faster than previously possible.

Customers increasingly rely on Exadata as their database platform of choice as enterprise workloads continue to grow and requirements become more stringent. Since its inception 10 years ago, Exadata has continued to meet and exceed the demands of all database workloads, delivering performance, value, and reliability unmatched by any other solution. The advantages of Exadata continue to grow because besides benefiting from improvements of underlying hardware components, Exadata continues to develop and add smart database-aware software, and to adopt novel technologies as they become available. Engineering software and hardware together enables a deep integration of novel technologies as soon as they meet Oracle’s stringent requirements.

The Oracle team has seamlessly incorporated Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory to develop Persistent Memory Accelerator for Exadata. Persistent Memory Accelerator provides direct access to persistent memory via RDMA. Workloads that require ultra low response time such as stock trades and IOT devices can now operate on consistent data stored in the database with no application overhead. This innovation in Exadata extends the value of Intel® Optane™ technology beyond fast caching and storage of today’s PCI NVMe Flash storage, to a new, breakthrough persistent memory tier for larger, faster data center scale processing. This close and fruitful technology collaboration between Intel and Oracle sets a new bar for platform innovation and unique requirements of data-centric workloads.

As our customer workloads drive ever larger in-memory workload footprints, expect lower latency for transactional applications and real-time analytics, the addition of Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory enables Exadata to meet and exceed their needs, by increasing available memory for compute-oriented tasks, as well as providing increased locality and direct access by enriching the memory hierarchy of storage servers with RDMA-enabled Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory.
