Dear partner With all the new hardware products and tools that Oraclehas recently announced I have spent a few good hours today and made a summary ofpartner specific resources. Let’s take them one by one: 1. The OracleZFS Storage Appliance got a softwareupdate and new8TB drives that will replace the now EOL 4TB ones. 2. The partnerZFS Raid calculator tool got an update and now it has the new 8 TB drives addedand also a few more competitors in the ZFS vs competition technical comparison. You can download it from Oracle HW TRC. 3. Wehave launched the new OracleX5-8 server, and is an amazing piece of technology. You would expect thisto be a standard X86 server - well the new server support OracleDatabase In-Memory Option and our Oracle Multitenant architecture making it the perfectmachines for small databases consolidation. 4. Lastbut certainly not least please enjoy the new OraclePrivate Cloud Appliance resource page dedicated to partners. First of all I would like tointroduce my colleagues’ blog: OracleCloud4Developers.Their goal is to help the developers understand how to use the Oracle PaaS& IaaS for their work. You will be able to read here some of the mosttechnical posts on cloud in this blogosphere. For today I would like tomake a recap of my 3 favorite partner resources from Oracle. I will start with HardwareTechnical Resource Center for OPN Partners, which is a beehive workspacethat provides Sales Engineers and Sales Consultants access to criticaltechnical product information for Oracle servers and storage. This is the place where all the EOLannouncement of our hardware will be posted together with all the informationyou will ever need to know about our hardware products. Second on my list is Oracle SystemHandbook, an actually gold mine for any presale that puts together hardwareproposal for his customer. The handbookis old as Sun Microsystem itself and is still the place to go if you wish tosee how the products look like if you strip them down to manufacturing partnumbers level. It’s downloadable and can even be access by your customer ifthey have an oracle support account. When I joined Oracle I camewith solid industry knowledge, yet with no tangible knowledge of Oracleproducts. After 3 weeks I was able to answer most of the customer questions andmy secret was (and still is) the Partner Competency Center online training. Here you will find product trainings that are grouptogether in specific products global learning path. What I love about this GLP’s is that they takea product (T5 severs or Oracle Linux for example) and present it from each ofthe opportunities stages perspectives. The best part of it is that is free andnew training are released almost in the same time with new product announcement. What is your favoritesOracle resource?

One of the biggestchallenges that traditional hardware vendors face is shifting their mindset tonew market expectations and preparing for today’s customer needs. Everyone inthe industry is investing massively in cloud, in a desperate attempt tocontradict one of Geoffrey Moore theory that states that old industry companieswill not be able to adapt to today’s needs without a total reinvention ofitself. I am a strong believer that Oracle is one of those companies that arealways adapting to the new demands with as little disruption as possible. When I started my apprenticeshipin the IT business storage customers asked their suppliers for predictabilitymore than anything else. They wanted to make sure that the solution they will buycan guarantee them to accommodate company growth for the next decade withoutthe need to change the technology. In today’s market thecustomer needs flexibility above everything else. The best example is thegrowing demand for storage cloud, demand that in 2015 is still not meet. Youcan contradict me by showing all the storage cloud offers that all the bighardware players are offering. Putting traditional storagehardware behind a datacenter and selling it as a cloud solution will not giveour customers the flexibility they need. Flexibility, for the customer, means beingable to put the right storage behind the database layer, storage which will bedifferent than the one behind their mobile application layer and yes, it willbe from a different supplier sometimes. Oracle did somethingwonderful with the latest ZS4-4 product launch last year in fall – it hasengineered it around the storage needs of our cloud software. Furthermore we madeit open stack friendly so our customers can buy our storage solutions in orderto better optimize their Oracle applications and still have the freedom toscale on any other storage product, from either Oracle or another vendor. Do not take my word for it,please take a few minutes to watch these introductory videos in how Oracleengineered our storage around our software. · John Fowler ZS4 Launch Video · Five Minutes to Insight: The Brilliance of In-Memory Storage · 5-minute insight - Database-level StorageAnalytics for Oracle Database 12c · 5-minute insight - Thin Cloning for OracleDatabase 12c · 5-minute insight - Data Encryption and theOracle ZFS Storage Appliance · 5-minute insight -ZFS Storage - Ideal forOpenStack

As a presales, one ofthe most challenging and yet interesting activity was to size customers storage requirements. I saw the first smartarray card when I was in my first year of college and at that time I onlyknew that RAID 0 can greatly speed up the performance of an operating system by writing the bits on 2 disk drive simultaneously.Only when I started my first job as a configuration expert I learned thatactually this is an industry standard that was around since1988. When I started mypresales job with Oracle I had to face for the first time the software RAID-Zthat our storage was using. I realized then how important it is to calculate the usable capacity the customer will have based on the various RAID-Z levels, especially when there was no tool that allowed us to achieve this in an easy way. Luckily some of the creative mind within my team (Marius Ghergut and Adrian Topa) found a solution to cover the tool gap by developing an excel based simple solution that allows us to calculatethe ZFS Storage Appliance storage space based on different configurationoptions. They called it ZFS raid calculator and you can download itfrom OracleHW TRC. (If you are notregistered on Oracle HW TRC, click here ... and follow the instructions.) Lookingtowards the datacenter move to cloud strategy, the software RAID is thetechnology of the future, as the storage cloud provider will have a big enougharray to move the parity from the conventional bit parity to the new data/blockparity. ---- As this is my first blog post I will alsotake this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Adrian Pruna and I leadone of presales team in Oracle. Apart from various tools and new technology announcementI will also share with you my personal learning journey from an on premiseexpert to an infrastructure cloud expert.

After the extended summer holidays of the eStep Blog, this eBook seems like a good start to catch up again after the long break. It serves quite well as a starting point to talk to customers about the Cloud and gives a good overview about different types of clouds with the example of Oracle products involved. However, the main focus of the eBook is IaaS, Infrastructure as a Service, which is also part of Oracle's Cloud offer. Here, you can download the eBook - Oracle Special Edition. ----- As a new writer in this blog, I'd like to take the opportunity and introduce myself. My name is Patrick Wurst and I grew up in southern Germany, where I also studied Business Informatics at the KIT. Consolidationin the data center is the driving factor in reducing capital andoperational expense in IT today. This is particularly relevant ascustomers invest more in cloud infrastructure and associated servicedelivery. Database consolidation is a strategic component in thiseffort. OracleDatabase 12 c introduces Oracle Multitenant , a new databaseconsolidation model in which multiple Pluggable Databases (PDBs) areconsolidated within a Container Database (CDB). While keeping many ofthe isolation aspects of single databases, it allows PDBs to sharethe system global area (SGA) and background processes of a common CDB. The white paper recently published on OTN: OracleMultitenant on SuperCluster T5-8: Study ofDatabase Consolidation Efficiency analyzesand quantifies savings in compute resources, efficiencies intransaction processing, and consolidation density of OracleMultitenant compared to consolidated single instance databases(SIDBs) running in a bare-metal environment.

In this following short note, Simon Hayler describes how Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c enables the patching of RHEL running as a guest on OVCA.The methodology is to utilize the Custom Channel features of Enterprise Manager 12c Linux Patching. The high level steps are as follows: A repository server under the control of Enterprise Manager 12c (Enterprise Manager 12c agent installed and configured) must exist in the environment, have a valid Oracle CSI and have access to the Oracle ULN. For more information on the Enterprise Manager 12c Linux Patching setup refer to the online documentation: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/em.121/e27046/pat_linux_patch.htm On the repository server create a file-system to store the RHEL rpm's, this should be in the same area as the Oracle Linux repository Create a portfolio of suitable RHEL rpm's and copy them to the repository server Create the metadata for the RHEL repository, the repository file-system contains the required rpm's Create a Custom Patching Channel within Enterprise Manager 12c Install Enterprise Manager agents on all target RHEL hosts Create an Enterprise Manager patching group selecting the target RHEL hosts as targets for the group Enterprise Manager 12c will run a compliance job to identify rpm's that are non compliant on the target hosts compared to the ones within the Custom Channel Either automatically or manually Enterprise Manager 12c runs a Deployment Procedure to update rpm's that are reported as non compliant Important note:A manual process is needed to create a portfolio of the required RHEL RPM’s to patch. Enterprise Manager 12c Linux Patching only connects to the Oracle ULN, therefore we are not able to either manually or automatically download RHEL rpm's.
In this following short note, Simon Hayler describes how Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c enables the patching of RHEL running as a guest on OVCA.The methodology is to utilize the Custom Channel features...

What are we announcing? We are announcing the immediate availability of a new service called Partner Budgetary Sizing Support. by the Oracle Systems Partner Enablement EMEA team and the EMEA Presales Center. The service provides a basis to choose the right Oracle Systems for your workload needs. The aim of this service is to provide our Partners a guidance what Oracle Systems to choose for their Oracle Application (and SAP) workloads. In addition, we offer budgetary information and some architectural diagrams of the recommended systems/architectures. All of this can be used by our Partners to improve their offerings to their respective customers, as we have observed an direct relation between win probability and the number of layers being added to the solution recommendation to the customer. The service is organized in a way, that the Partner sends a request to the infoline_hw_ww@oracle.com email address, receiving back a questionnaire. With the results of the questionnaire we then perform this service and will return the budgetary sizing and any additional information requested. A detailed description "Budgetary Sizing Read Me" of this service is available for download from our eSTEP portal (s. below). The description incluses also some sample outputs and a list of Software, that this service is available for. There is quite an interesting post on Oracle Hardware from Michael Palmeter regarding Exadata and SuperCluster, worth to read and think about it. On 23rd of Dec 2013 Michael Palmeter wrote: Oracle has been shipping an Oracle Exadata configuration that runs Oracle’s T and M-series (SPARC) microprocessors for more than 2 years. This database machine is called Oracle SuperCluster. Technically, SuperCluster has always included every single Exadata feature of note. This is because every SuperCluster configuration is built around the same Exadata Storage Servers and InfiniBand switches that are used in every other Exadata system configuration.
