Doing the Remote Work Thang - Redux

Over three years ago, I posted of my home office setup... much change in the interim, and thought it might be interesting to document the differences...

  August 2004
October 2007
DesktopSun Ultra80 SPARC workstation running Solaris 9 update 6
Shuttle SK83G AMD64 workstation running OpenSolaris NV73
LaptopToshiba Tecra 9100 running Sun JDS rev 2
Toshiba Tecra M2 running OpenSolaris NV73
 PrinterLexmark Z51 inkjet (via CUPS)
HP DeskJet 6980 wireless inkjet (via CUPS)
 Internet Connection
ADSL @ 380K/165K - $80/mon
Cable broadband @ 10M/300K - $45/mon
 Phone2-line 900 MHz wireless
2-line 2.4 GHz wireless

And what have we learned here?...

  1. Yes, most everything is cheaper and faster
  2. Solaris is completely usable as a day-to-day desktop
  3. Sun has been great at continuing to support my remoteness, including but not limited to subsidizing most of this equipment
