How GENCO did it – Resource Management and Project Portfolio Management #PPM Implementation
By Sylvie MacKenzie, Director, Marketing-Oracle on Apr 14, 2014
Project management success did not happen without its share of drama at GENCO. They met, and often exceed customer expectations but not without “last second diving catches, heroic efforts and brute force,” said Doug Belding, Senior Director of Product Management in his webcast on Resource Management and Project Portfolio Management Implementation.
Like many Project Portfolio Managers focused on resource management best practices, Doug wanted to change the company’s approach, and reconfigure their entire resource strategy; he felt there was an easier way to achieve the same or greater level of success, but without the last minute additional costs, time and stress added to a project. Sourcing an easy-to-use and quick to implement solution was a high priority for Doug. He wanted to know: “what people were doing, when they expected to finish, and what’s next” – seemingly simple questions but traditionally challenging to answer in a reliable and timely way. His decision made to change processes and resource management for the better, Doug selected the best tool for the job and began its implementation within GENCO. If you think the implementation of a new project management system is a slow and complex process, then you need to hear Doug’s story, his lessons learned and the factors contributing to its success. Doug illustrates how easy it is to install and implement a new PPM system and then get it up and running to assist with his organisation’s resource management process.
An extremely complex business, GENCO is a global top 25 third-party logistics provider, with over 120 facilities, and more than 10,000 employees. The organisation’s fast-paced and deadline-driven workload was the overriding impetus to change their resource strategy, highlighting their need for a systematic and methodical approach to effective resource planning and deployment.
In his webcast on Resource Management and Project Portfolio Management Implementation, Doug offers guidance on how to successfully set-up a PPM system. The speed at which GENCO’s Project Management Office was implemented was impressive, and Doug provides some interesting insight into how to be ready for that pace, including; knowing the process you want to implement and being prepared for it, videotaping the first few days of implementation to help with future learning and training, and dedicating a full project management resource to it, making it their “job priority number one.”
