Bike to JavaOne

Lance jersey giveawayWe did one of those simple-but-effective activities at JavaOne. Working with the San Francisco Bike Coalition we provided free, secure bike parking at the Mosconne Center for each day of JavaOne.

Was it effective? We got a few dozen bikes each day, but it added up to some goodness. Total CO2 savings were in the multiple ton range, assuming those folks would have driven if they hadn't rode. We'll make it happen again next year, and I want to hit the 20-ton savings mark.

Congrats to the team!

The big take away for me was the effectiveness given the scale. A small number bike2j1-3.jpgof energetic folks made this happen, and even those who didn't bike got some eco-responsibility reminders. Last week Thomas Friedman said that his hopes are lifted by the "million Manhattan projects" that are tackling our energy challenges. We need those million, but we also need the billion smaller projects that don't warrant the Manhattan analogy.

Okay, I considered doing it but I didn't. Still I avoided expending carbon for my travels, but in a way you're not able to count. My consideration: I live close to the caltrain station in Mtn View. I've ridden a bicycle up 4th street once, and that's not something I want to do again. I found that street to be very potholey and full of traffic, and simply not friendly to bicyclists. And, in any case, it's simple enough to catch a bus between Moscone and the Caltrain station. Another consideration is I had two very late nights on my schedule, with BOF's starting at 10:30 which I had to attend. That would have meant leaving 4th and King on the midnight train, and I wouldn't get home until 1:30 or later, just to turn around again early the next morning to make it in for early sessions. So, instead, I chose to get a hotel room and stay there. The Mosser Hotel is just around the corner from Moscone and offers amazing rates for that neighborhood. By staying in SF I completely avoided travel back and forth on three days. What was my carbon savings?
