Oracle OpenWorld 2015 wrap-up – Middleware & PaaS perspective

clip_image002Oracle OpenWorld 2015 market an important point for Oracle as all the Oracle PaaS services are in production, more are announced and integration starts. Let us start from the beginning of the Platform as a Service (PaaS) journey for Oracle; at last years OpenWorld Oracle announced several PaaS services in advance of availability. Based on Java Cloud Service, which is available for more than a year, Oracle grow the portfolio within the last 12 months. With the majority in the PaaS service, which became wildly available, the European Partners are leading the adoption to the cloud.

Let’s take a look why, with more 50% of the global specialized partners are based in Europe, it is easy for them to join the journey. Oracle offers the same middleware software on-premises as on the cloud. This enables customers and partners to adopt easy and to secure investments. Over the last 12 months, our partners like Amis have proven successful cloud adoption by building proof of concepts, projects and showcasing our PaaS service. Customer can choose from a variety of cloud service offerings and fist applications at the Oracle Cloud Marketplace for example the Amis Cloud Activator Service. Oracle crossed successful the PaaS Cloud Chasm.

What is the next step in our joint cloud journey? During Oracle OpenWorld 2015 the keynotes focused on the integrated hybrid cloud. Integrated with Developer Cloud Service and also within each other. A great example is the HCL predictive maintenance showcase. The use case includes the complete flow from fault recognition, gather and diagnose information, repair and settle and schedule preventive maintenance. The whole show case was build on the Oracle PaaS Platform including IoT, Integration, Process and Mobile Cloud Service. In the upcoming months integration between cloud services will be much tighter including hybrid scenarios.

The unique Oracle value proposition are the same middleware products on-premises as in the cloud. In case you missed it Oracle release key now on-premises versions including SOA Suite, BPM Suite and WebLogic. Key features include multi tendency in WebLogic 12.2.1, JSON support in SOA Suite 12.2.1, Java Script in Service Bus or in memory SOA to name some of the highlights. This new version make hybrid solutions much easier from deploying the same Java application on a private WebLogic instance or a Java Cloud Service to shifting workload of a running application. Or to start a process in the cloud and continue the same process in a private cloud.

At the same time we see the raise of the citizen developer. Business users with technical background will be able to build dashboards in Data Virtualization Cloud Service or applications by drag and drop including integrations. This cloud adapters can be deployed anywhere on-premises, private cloud or a public cloud. Citizen developers will shift their daily work for Outlook and excel to cloud enabled applications. At the same time we will continue to see consulting companies like Amis to build enterprise applications, for the core competences of our joint customer base, with full blown functionality, big data & warehouses and enterprise wide integration platforms. In this hybrid cloud world security is key.

For your own impressions, keynotes are available on-demand

#OOW15 Wrap by Frank Munz

clip_image002

Oracle Open World is finished and IMHO it was great! What I particularly enjoyed was that Oracle this year delivered a lot of what was announced last year. The cloud offerings seem to be heading the right way (Oracle uses industry accepted terms now when talking about cloud, concludes to my definitions and delivers across IaaS, PaaS and SaaS). In addition Oracle Fusion Middleware 12.2.1, in particular WebLogic 12.2.1 is out with multi tenancy micro containers, exportable partitions, a brand new REST management interface, new JDK support, new Java EE 7 support, policies, actions and true elasticity.

WebLogic Server 12.2.1 new features slides Read the complete article here.

Oracle OpenWorld 2015: Finally a real Vision and Mission. A pleasant surprise by Robbrecht van Amerongen

clip_image001For me the 2015 Oracle OpenWorld was a pleasant surprise.  The surprise was not the announcement of an additional set of cloud products like the Identity Cloud or the Application Builder Cloud Service. The biggest surprise was the different tone of voice during the conference.

In the past you could summarize Oracle’s message as: We are Bigger and Better in technology, Open Source is bad,  Cloud is important, We (Oracle) Offer a full set of products and you do not have to look at other vendors. All your problems will be solved when you buy Oracle.

There is a change happening in Oracle, and the most important change is not the new products. Is a change in market approach, culture and structure.

Larry finally found his vision and mission

The change was visible in the Sunday and Tuesday keynote by Oracle’s CTO Larry Ellison. After a long time Oracle finally has a vision. And surprisingly it has nothing to do with technology. The vision steers Oracle in a completely different direction. Oracle needs to transform from a tech company to a services organization. It was definitely an inspiring keynote. The SAAS, PAAS, and IAAS business is taken very serious. I expected a full blown attack on Amazon and Salesforce,  but Larry is seeing them as inspiring example.  The CTO of Oracle seemed to have found his new horizon and he is eager to get there. He really looked like he enjoyed it again.

The full stack offering is not the only choice  anymore

2 Min Tech Tips at Oracle OpenWorld: Are You Ready for Your Close-Up?

clip_image002At last year's Oracle OpenWorld I had more fun than should be allowed by law recording 2 Minute Tech Tip videos with about two dozen community members -- about twice the number I had originally scheduled. People just kept showing up! And that number doesn't include the Tech Tip videos I recorded in the weeks leading up to OOW14, featuring people who were speaking at the event and wanted to help promote their sessions by distilling their presentations into key take-aways.

This year I'll be at it again -- with better gear and a sleeker format for the finished videos. So if you'll be at OOW15 and have 120 seconds worth of insight an expertise you'd like to share with the world, I want you on my schedule.

I also want to hear from any OOW15 session presenters who want to promote their sessions in advance with a 2 Minute Tech Tip. Leave a comment below or contact me via Twitter @OTNArchBeat so we can work out the details.

Developer Recap: Fusion Middleware at OpenWorld 2014 by Jens Eckels

clip_image002Oracle OpenWorld is over, but there's still plenty to consume! Much of the developer attention was focused on JavaOne down the road, but that doesn't mean we forgot about you! Here's a brief recap of the goings-on, some sessions you may have missed, and some useful links. Hopefully, you can take a few minutes and get all caught up

Sessions and Keynotes
Just for you, we had a ton of OOW sessions focused on developing for Fusion Middleware. These didn't just focus on Oracle products, but also how using popular tools and frameworks can help you achieve your goals faster. These sessions focused on everything from mobile development to DevOps, with a specific focus on - you guessed it - cloud. Some useful links:
OpenWorld Keynote and Session Rewinds
JavaOne Keynotes
OpenWorld General Sessions
Yeah, yeah, yeah (you might be heard to say).
Those are all big-picture things that don't affect me on a daily basis (you might think).
You're difficult to please, aren't you? Ok, then. Let us try something else...
If you're still assuming OpenWorld isn't right for you as a developer, check out some of the sessions we completed in 2014, and we can hopefully change your mind for OpenWorld 2015.
   • A Guide to Team Development in the Cloud with Oracle Developer Cloud Service
   • Innovating in the Core: Development with Oracle WebLogic Server 12c
   • Next-Generation Oracle WebLogic Server Provisioning: Puppet, Chef, and More
   • Developing Oracle Fusion Middleware Applications in the Cloud
   • Amplify Service Integration Developer Productivity with Oracle SOA Suite 12c
And of course much more. These five examples are a sampling meant to make you hungry for more.
Kind of like good chips and salsa before your tacos arrive. Read the complete article here.
